He Proposed to Me to Punish Her Chapter 04

He Proposed to Me to Punish Her Chapter 04

I limped a few steps away after speaking and spotted Gillian standing not far off.

A heavy silence hung in the air.

Gillian acted like she hadn’t heard a thing.

“I’m just passing by to pick up Aidan from school.”

She turned and walked quickly away, and Liam ran after her.

She panicked and ran straight into the street without looking.

The accident happened in the blink of an eye. A loud crash echoed through the air.

Liam pushed Gillian out of the way and was hit by the car, flying several feet across the road.

“Liam! Don’t leave me!” Gillian screamed, clutching his hand tightly. “You promised you’d always take care of me and stay by my side.”

“I won’t let you die! If you pull through, I’ll agree to anything you want!”

She turned to me like I was her last hope.

“Chris, please help him!”

I calmed Gillian down while calling for an ambulance and explaining Liam’s injuries to the operator.

The ambulance arrived quickly. Gillian never let go of his hand the entire time.

I called a friend to go look after Lucas at their house.

Liam was wheeled straight into the Operating Room. Gillian cried helplessly and leaned against me.

“I messed up,” she whispered. “I knew he loved me, but I pushed him toward someone who never had his heart.”

I was the one he never loved.

It was the plain truth, but hearing her say it out loud still twisted my heart in pain.

“He’ll be fine,” I told her softly.

After surgery, Liam was moved to the ICU. Gillian stayed with him every single day.

Three days later, he was transferred to a regular ward in the General Private Hospital.

I made a pot of Cream of Mushroom Soup and brought it over to him.

I pushed the ward door open and saw them staring at each other. The intensity of their locked gazes created a world of their own, shut tight against the rest of us.

I saw Liam again a week later. The two people who loved each other had finally overcome all their troubles and chosen to be together.

I peeled an apple for my grandmother and adjusted the bed for her in the Private Orthopedic Hospital.

Liam stood nearby and watched everything silently.

Once I finished, we stood together in the busy hospital hallway.

He cleared his throat.

“I’d like you to come to my wedding with Manning.”

Their wedding was scheduled for the following week. It was all very rushed, probably because he feared Gillian would change her mind.

I thought for a moment and shook my head.

“I owe you an apology, Chris. But Manning truly cares about you.”

“She’ll be heartbroken if you don’t come. I get rid of anyone and anything that hurts her.”

His words were not a request. They were an order, a threat. He never gave me a choice.

“I’m going to check on your grandmother,” he said, starting to walk toward her room.

I grabbed his arm in a panic.

“I’ll go.”
