“What do you mean, she died too?” 

Mr. Collins held his breath. “Because of the issue with 

her medical payments, the medication wasn’t given in 

time, and before anything could be done, she passed 

away.” 

“It was because of the issue with her medical 

payments.” 

Nathan felt his throat seize. 

He had taken Grace’s call. 

The card had not worked, and he had chosen not to 

believe her. 

Mr. Collins continued carefully, his voice trembling. “Mrs. Sterling got into the accident on her way to find 

you.” 

Nathan’s face turned deathly pale, his lips trembling 

uncontrollably. 

“I want to see her again.” 

He paid a huge amount of money to obtain the hospital security footage. 

Then he watched every second of that day over and 

over again. 

He saw it all. 

Grace had been mocked and pointed at over her 

mother’s medical bills. 

She had cried helplessly, begging for help. 

He had heard her, and he still had not believed her. 

Inside those loose clothes, she was so thin she was 

almost unrecognizable. 

Nathan reached out to the screen with a trembling 

hand. 

“Grace… did it hurt that much back then too?” 

“I’m sorry. I was blind.” 

He covered his face as tears seeped through his fingers. 

They tasted bitter. 

He looked around the house, and Grace was 

everywhere. 

It was the first house he had ever bought for her after 

he started making real money. 

Grace loved staying in the kitchen, trying out all kinds of nourishing soups for him. 

She would follow recipes she found online and make 

every kind of dessert she could think of. 

No matter how late he came home, there was always warm light left on by the stairs. 

And the figure on the couch would always be nodding 

off. 

The moment she saw him, she would throw herself into 

his arms and cling to him. 

Her voice would be soft and sweet. 

“Nathan, why are you only just getting back?” 

“I’ve been waiting forever.” 

His eyes stung. He pressed the urn to his chest. 

“Grace. Honey.” 

“You were the one who dragged me out of the mud, so 

how can you… abandon me now?” 

“The house is so cold. I don’t want to be alone.” 

He canceled every performance he had scheduled. 

He refused to see anyone. 

Day and night, he held that little box in his arms. 

The woman he used to take for granted was someone 

he could never hold again. 

One morning, Lila showed up dressed to the nines. 

She hooked herself right onto his arm. 

“Nathan, you didn’t propose to me at all this month.” 

“Was it because Grace didn’t want you to?” 

Nathan’s voice dropped. “Let go.” 

“What’s wrong?” Lila went on carelessly. “I heard 

Grace died in that accident.” 

“It’s sad, sure, but life has to go on.” 

“I said let go. Get out.” 

Nathan grabbed her wrist and flung her away. 

“Don’t touch me. And don’t you ever talk about her 

again.” 

Red–eyed, Lila stepped forward, her expression. 

turning vicious. She knocked the urn out of his hands. 

“What’s so important about it? She’s just a dead 

woman.” 

“She can’t do anything for you anymore, and she 

didn’t even leave you a child.” 

“Nathan, I’m the only one who was ever right for you.” 

Nathan said nothing. 

He only looked down at the ashes scattered all over the 

floor. 

Then he gathered them up little by little and cradled them in his arms. 

He slapped Lila hard across the face, then grabbed her by the hair. 

“Who gave you the right to talk about her like that?” 

“She’s my wife. Apologize.” 

Lila’s breathing turned ragged. “I didn’t say anything wrong.” 

“Nathan, she’s dead now.” 

Nathan gave a cold laugh and drove his foot hard into 

her ribs. 

The crack of bone breaking was sickeningly clear. 

He snapped one of Lila’s fingers and carefully took the 

ring into his palm. 

“That’s my wife’s wedding ring. What makes you think you deserve to wear it?” 

Curled up on the floor, Lila burst into laughter. 

“So what? Nathan, you’re the one who gave it to me.” 

“I kissed you right in front of her, and you sent her to 

the police station for me.” 

“Why didn’t you remember she was your wife back then?” 

Nathan’s eyes went bloodshot as he wrapped his hands 

around her throat. 

“Shut up. I didn’t. I never-” 

“This is all your fault. You’re the one who stirred all this up.” 

Lila spat out a mouthful of blood and sucked in a painful breath. 

“Oh really? I drove you apart?” 

“Then why didn’t you believe her?” 

“The way she begged you for money was pathetic–like 

a dog.” 

Nathan froze as if he had been struck by lightning. 

“It was you. You were the one who tampered with the 

card.” 

“You went behind my back and kept hurting her.” 

Lila wiped the blood from her mouth and staggered to her feet. “Wasn’t that exactly what you were doing?” 

“Didn’t you see how horribly she died?” 

Pain crashed over him from every direction. Nathan 

collapsed to his knees. 

He could barely hold himself upright. 

His eyes were so red they looked bloodshot, and his 

hands shook as he clutched at his chest. 

A broken sob tore out of him. 

“Lila, I won’t let you get away with this.”
