He Promised Me Photos, She Got Them Instead Chapter 04

Dylan noticed me staring at my phone and nudged my arm. His voice sounded strangely stiff.

“The reception outside the school was terrible. By the time my order finally went through, I’d only managed to get two tickets.”

“If you still want to go, I can find you a resale ticket on StubHub. It just won’t be anywhere near our seats.”

Madison hurried to apologize.

“Hannah, please don’t be mad. You can have my ticket if you want to go.”

“No.”

Dylan cut her off immediately and shot me an annoyed look.

“You’ve loved Taylor Swift for years. Why should you give Hannah your ticket?”

Then he turned to me. “Hannah, don’t make this into a thing.”

I had not said a word, yet somehow I was already being accused of causing trouble.

My temper flared. “I didn’t want to go anyway.”

I was telling the truth.

I had been a fan for ten years, but the concert was in New York City the day before college move-in. UT Austin was more than seventeen hundred miles away, so there was no way I could attend.

I meant every word, but Dylan refused to believe me.

“I already said I’d get you a ticket. Why are you acting like this?”

“With how slowly you move and how easily you get lost, you’d probably arrive too late to see the show even if you managed to get a ticket on your own.”

I had known Dylan for more than ten years, but he had never spoken to me like that before.

My eyes filled with tears almost instantly.

“Hannah…”

“Excuse me. Coming through.”

A server carrying our food interrupted him.

Dylan gave me a helpless look, then silently set the blackened fish tacos in front of me.

Because of my hives, I did not eat a single bite all night.

Even when Dylan quietly pulled apart the fish in one of the tacos to make sure there were no bones and placed the boneless pieces on my plate while no one was looking, I pretended not to notice.

As everyone was leaving, our class president suddenly said, “Dylan, if you’re free this summer, we should take a trip together.”

Dylan froze and pressed his lips together uneasily.

Madison gave an awkward laugh.

“Sorry, but Dylan and I already booked flights to Miami for tomorrow…”
