He Posted Ninety-Nine Sorries And I Posted My Goodbye Chapter 03

That night, the thunder kept coming.

Every time lightning lit up the room, I felt my body tense.

The last time it stormed like this, we’d fought about the cat again. In the heat of it, I said we should break up. He paused for one second, then agreed.

The next day, I found out I was pregnant.

I pressed into his chest and told him, “Let’s get married.”

He went still for a long moment, then pulled me out of his arms.

“That’s disgusting.”

I thought he was just angry. I tugged his sleeve. “Ethan, please don’t talk like that—”

“I’m not joking.”

He pulled his arm away. “Neither am I. Using a pregnancy to force marriage? You don’t think that’s low?”

“Five years. That’s all it was to you? Someone else could’ve filled the same spot?”

I stood there frozen.

Then Lily called. She was at the airport.

He glanced at me, picked up. “I’ll be right there.”

The door closed. Thunder crashed outside.

I cried alone in the dark for a long, long time.

When I came off the operating table, Lily’s social media updated. A photo of Ethan crouched in the airport terminal, tying her shoelace. The caption: [Back home.]

The anesthesia was still wearing off. The ache was still fresh.

And in that moment, I decided I was done with Ethan Cole.

In the dark, warmth pressed against me. An arm wrapped around, and I was pulled into his chest.

His hand found my stomach, thumb stroking gently. His voice came low, rough. “Almost three months now.”

I shoved him off and sat up.

Ethan jerked back, caught off guard, already annoyed. “What the hell, Sophie?”

Thunder rolled again. I flinched without thinking.

He clicked his tongue, then leaned over and pulled the blanket back over me. “Sleep.”

Silence stretched.

“Ethan.” My voice was flat. “Are you really just figuring out I’m scared of thunder?”

I looked up at him, lightning catching his face.

He knew. He always knew.

But every stormy night for years, he wasn’t there.

First time, I called—he said he was in the lab and hung up fast.

Second time, he was driving Lily home.

Third time, helping Lily find her cat.

I stopped hoping after that.

His eyes flickered, but the cold mask slid back fast. “I don’t have time to—”

“It’s not that you don’t have time.” I cut him off. “You just don’t want to.”

“You’re really dragging up old shit now?”

He yanked at his collar, pulling his phone out and shoving it in my face. “You see this? You’re not the only one who needs me.”

Lily’s name was on the screen. Her message: [Ethan, where’d you go? The thunder’s so loud!]

I looked at it and felt nothing but bitter irony.

Three years together. My contact name in his phone was always ”Sophie Miller.” No emojis. No cute nickname.

And I actually convinced myself he just wasn’t into that stuff.

I pulled the blanket over my head. “Do whatever you want.”

“Fine. Your call.”

He walked to the door, stopped, breathing heavy.

“Sophie. What do you actually want from me?”

I closed my eyes.

“Here’s the reminder—we’re not in a silent treatment. We broke up.”

The door slammed so hard the room shook.
