He Ordered My Torture, Then Said I Love You Chapter 08

Julian’s men broke Jade’s hands and ankles before the police

came to arrest her.

Word from the detention center was that she could barely

move now, only crawl, which made her an easy target for the other inmates. She’d completely lost it, spending her days screaming at the wall, begging Arthur to come save her.

But her precious Arthur could barely save his own skin.

Julian went to war against Sterling Enterprises. He sniped

their projects, choked off their cash flow, and poached their

key executives.

In just two weeks, the once–mighty Sterling Enterprises was

on the verge of bankruptcy. Arthur sold off his luxury cars and

mansions, even mortgaged his private vineyard abroad, all to stop the bleeding at his company.

Still, he refused to sign the divorce papers.

He showed up at the hospital every day, and when they

wouldn’t let him in, he waited outside the building. Rain or

shine.

Then one day, Julian told me Arthur had transferred all of Sterling Enterprises‘ remaining assets into my name. It was

his last move.

“Let him in,” I told Julian.

When Arthur walked in, I barely recognized him. He was gaunt, his eyes hollow and his jaw dark with stubble.

The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up like a drowning man

catching a lifeline.

“Claire…”

He approached the bed carefully, his hand reaching toward me before he stopped himself, as if he didn’t deserve to touch me.

“I know what I did was unforgivable…”

“I’ll give you everything. Just give me one more chance.”

“Arthur.”

I cut him off, my voice flat.

“I don’t need your money. The Montgomerys have plenty.”

“Your money makes me sick.”

“Sign it.”

I pushed the divorce papers toward him.

“My only regret is ever loving you.”

Arthur flinched like I’d struck him, and the hope left his eyes.

“Claire, is there really… no way back?”

“I know I was wrong… I’ve regretted it every day…”

“Every night I dream of you covered in blood, and I wish I

could go back and stop the man I was…‘

He buried his face in his hands and sobbed.

“If only I had trusted you…”

“If I hadn’t been so paranoid…”

“If…”

“No more ifs.”

I looked at him and felt nothing resembling satisfaction, only a bone–deep weariness.

“Arthur, love that shows up too late is worthless.”

“The moment you ordered them to crush my fingers, we were already done.”

“You don’t regret it because you love me. You regret it because

you lost me, lost the Montgomery name, and lost your pride.”

“The only person you’ve ever loved is you.”

Arthur froze. He opened his mouth to argue, but no words

came.

After a long beat, he picked up the pen with trembling hands

and signed. The moment he finished, he collapsed to the floor

as though the last of his strength had left him.

“Claire… I’m sorry…”

“I hope you find… happiness… I hope you find peace.”

“I will,” I said, and I smiled. “Without you, I’m going to be

fine.”

“That’s… that’s good…”

He stumbled out with his shoulders hunched, looking like a

man who had aged ten years in minutes.

I watched him go, then let my eyes fall closed.

Finally, it was over.
