He Ordered My Torture, Then Said I Love You Chapter 06

Arthur burst into the ward, clutching a document.

When he saw me, bandaged and motionless on the bed, he

stopped short.

His expression shifted, shock to panic. And something else,

guilt, maybe.

Guilt. Almost funny.

Where was his guilt when he broke my bones?

Now that he knew who I was, that the Montgomerys would destroy him, suddenly he felt guilty?

“Claire…”

His voice shook. He moved forward. Julian stepped into his

path.

“That’s close enough.”

Arthur swallowed. His eyes found mine over Julian’s shoulder.

“Claire, you’re a Montgomery… why didn’t you say anything?”

“If I’d known, I never would have…”

“Wouldn’t have what?” My voice came out hoarse.

“Wouldn’t have thrown me in that chapel like an animal?”

“Wouldn’t have done this to me just because Jade told you

to?”

“Arthur, does it matter who I am?”

“The point is, you never trusted me.”

Arthur went pale. His mouth opened, closed.

“No… I was played…”

“It was Jade. She told me you hurt her. She showed me proof.”

“I didn’t know she was faking it, I really didn’t know…”

He thrust the document toward me.

“Look. I had it all rechecked.”

“I know the truth now. Jade did it to herself!”

“And this time… she framed you. She was using me to get you

out of the way!”

“Claire, I got played too! She tricked me into hurting you!”

It was almost laughable.

This was the man I’d loved for seven years.

And his first instinct was still to make excuses.

“Arthur, you’re not the victim.” I met his eyes.

“you’re an accomplice.”

“Jade wanted to kill me, but you’re the one who handed her

the knife. You’re the one who shoved it in.”

“Now you want to say you’re innocent?”

“Then whose men shattered my hands? Whose orders broke my legs?”

Arthur staggered backward.

He stared at my bandaged hand. His eyes burned.

“I’m sorry… Claire, I’m really sorry…”

“I’ll fix this. I’ll get you the best doctors.”

“I locked up Jade. That bitch, you can do whatever you want to

her!”

“I beg you, don’t divorce me… don’t leave me…”

He dropped to his knees and grabbed for my bedsheet.

“We had something, didn’t we? I treated you well. All those

years…”

“Good?” I laughed. The sound turned hysterical, tore at my

wounds. I couldn’t stop.

“Arthur, is that what you call good?”

“Keeping me around as a caregiver while you were in love with

someone else?”

“Having my fingers broken to make her happy, while I was being held captive?”

“I can’t afford that kind of ‘kindness.“”

I closed my eyes.

“Julian, get him out.

“Give him the papers.”

Julian flung the document at Arthur’s face.

“Sign. Then get the hell out of here.”

“Otherwise, Sterling Enterprises won’t exist in Northmont

tomorrow.”

Arthur stared at the papers on the floor. His hands shook. He

didn’t reach for them.

“No… I won’t sign… Claire wouldn’t do this…”

“I’m not signing!”

His voice broke into a scream. The bodyguards hauled him out.

His voice carried down the hallway.

“Claire! I’m sorry! Please, just give me one more chance!”

Forgiveness? Some wounds never heal. They just keep

bleeding.
