He Opened the Door, I Walked Out Chapter 08

I woke to unfamiliar silence.

No alarm clock buzzing. No Richard’s breathing beside me. Just the soft hum of expensive air conditioning and light filtering through curtains I didn’t recognize.

The events of the previous night rushed back in vivid detail-the bar, the conversation, the way Wolf had looked at me like I was something precious. The way his hands had worshipped my body with a reverence I’d forgotten existed. The way he’d made me feel alive again.

I turned over, expecting to find him beside me, but the other side of the king-sized bed was empty, the sheets cool to the touch. A note on the pillow explained his absence: “Business calls early. Coffee and breakfast waiting. You were magnificent. – W”

My cheeks warmed at the memory of just how magnificent we’d been together. I pulled the hotel robe around myself and padded to the sitting area, where a silver service waited with fresh coffee, croissants, and fruit. The thoughtfulness of it made my chest tight with an emotion I couldn’t name.

As I poured coffee into bone china, my eyes caught something on the side table that made my blood freeze.

A manila folder. Thick, official-looking, with papers spilling slightly from the edges. What made my heart stop wasn’t the folder itself, but the letterhead visible on the top document.

“Sterling & Associates.”

Richard’s company.

My hands trembled as I set down the coffee cup, the delicate china rattling against the saucer. This had to be a coincidence. Wolf was a businessman-he probably dealt with dozens of companies. There could be any number of reasons he’d have Sterling & Associates documents.

But even as I tried to rationalize it, dread was pooling in my stomach like ice water.

I shouldn’t look. Whatever was in that folder was none of my business. Wolf’s professional life had nothing to do with what had happened between us last night.

But my hands moved of their own accord, pulling the folder closer.

The first document was a contract. Technical language about acquisitions and board restructuring that I didn’t fully understand. But at the bottom, in bold black ink, was a signature that made the world tilt sideways.

“Julian Sterling, Chairman of the Board.”

Julian Sterling.

The name Richard spoke with equal parts fear and reverence. The mysterious chairman who’d bought out the company six months ago. The man whose decisions had been reshaping Richard’s entire professional world.

The man whose very name could make my husband’s face go pale.

My Wolf. My magnificent, dangerous Wolf was Julian Sterling.

I sank onto the sofa, the folder sliding from numb fingers. Pages scattered across the coffee table, each one bearing that same

signature, that same name. Financial reports, personnel evaluations, strategic plans-all signed with the bold strokes of a man accustomed to wielding power.

How had I not seen it? The expensive clothes, the confident way he’d commanded attention at the bar, the suite at the Carlisle-one of the most exclusive hotels in the city. The way he’d spoken about business transactions and clear terms. This wasn’t just a successful man. This was a man who owned companies, who bought and sold careers like commodities.

Who owned my husband’s career.

My phone buzzed with a text, and I fumbled for it with shaking hands.

Richard: “Emergency board meeting this morning. Sterling wants to see the quarterly projections. Wish me luck.”

I stared at the message, my mind reeling. While Richard was preparing to present to his intimidating chairman, that same chairman had spent the night making love to Richard’s wife.

The irony was so sharp it cut.

Another buzz. This time from an unknown number.

“Good morning, beautiful. Last night was unforgettable. When can I see you again? – J”

Julian.
I set the phone down carefully, as if it might explode. My reflection in the mirror across the room showed a woman I barely recognized -hair tousled from passionate lovemaking, skin still flushed, eyes wide with shock and something that might have been hysteria.

What had I done?

I’d slept with my husband’s boss. Not just any boss-the man who held Richard’s entire career in his hands. The man who could destroy everything Richard had worked for with a single decision.

And he didn’t know. Julian-Wolf-had no idea who I was. To him, I was just Elaine, a married woman looking for excitement. He had no clue that the husband I’d mentioned was one of his own employees.

My coffee had gone cold, but I drank it anyway, needing something to do with my hands. The bitter taste matched the churning in my

stomach.

I thought about last night-the way Julian had touched me, the reverence in his voice when he’d called me extraordinary. Had any of it been real? Or was I just another conquest for a man who was used to taking whatever he wanted?

But even as the cynical thoughts circled, I couldn’t forget the genuine desire in his eyes, the way his breath had caught when I’d touched him. Whatever else Julian Sterling might be, his attraction to me had been real.

The question was: what happened now?

I could pretend it never happened. Delete his number, avoid the places where we might run into each other, let it remain a perfect, isolated memory. Richard need never know that his wife had slept with the man who terrified him.

Or I could tell Julian the truth. Reveal that I was Mrs. Richard Mills, that the complicated marriage I’d mentioned belonged to one of his employees. Watch his face change when he realized the implications of what we’d done.

Neither option felt safe. Both carried the potential to destroy everything.

I gathered the scattered papers, trying to put them back in order, when one document caught my eye. A personnel file with Richard’s name at the top. My hands stilled as I read the notes in Julian’s handwriting.

“Competent but unimaginative. Lacks vision for the future direction of the company. Consider for restructuring.

Restructuring. In corporate speak, that usually meant one thing: firing.

My husband’s job-the career he’d spent twenty years building-was hanging by a thread. And the man who held that thread had spent last night in bed with me.

I closed the folder with trembling hands, my mind racing. This changed everything. This made everything infinitely more complicated

and dangerous.

My phone buzzed again. Julian.

“I can’t stop thinking about you. Are you free for lunch today?”

I stared at the message, my finger hovering over the keyboard. One word could end this before it went any further. One word could protect my marriage, my husband’s career, the careful life I’d spent twenty years building.

But as I sat there in the aftermath of the most passionate night I’d had in years, surrounded by evidence of my lover’s power over my husband’s fate, I realized something that should have terrified me but instead sent a thrill of dark excitement through my veins.

I held all the cards now.

The question was: what was I going to do with them?
