I went to the hospital alone.

After registering, I was waiting in the lobby when a new contact request appeared on my phone.

I froze.

Almost instantly, I understood why he had added me.

Julian had said he would have someone send me clothes.

He had probably dumped the task on Noah, his cousin, again.

After a moment of hesitation, I accepted.

Then I replied directly.

[I don’t need the clothes. You don’t have to send them. Thanks.]

After I sent it, the typing indicator stayed on for a long time.

About ten minutes later, his message finally came through.

[My brother did ask me about that, but I’m in Boston for a competition right now. I can’t get back for a while. I added you because I wanted to ask if you’re okay.]

Noah and I had only spoken once.

I could tell he wasn’t exactly gentle or thoughtful.

But those words almost made me cry.

I replied, [I’m fine.]

Not long after, he called.

“I asked around about what happened. A friend of mine was there too. He said he saw Chloe go refill her cup

with hot water after class. Want me to explain it to my brother?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Noah didn’t push it. He only sighed.

“You ran too fast last time. I didn’t even get to add your WhatsApp. You have no idea how many people I had to ask just to find your contact.”

That day, he talked with me for fifteen minutes.

At the end, he said, “My competition is about to start. Wish me luck?”
