He Missed His Son’s Eye Surgery For Her Follow-Up Visit Chapter 08

Gavin tossed printouts of the hospital system logs at her feet.

“Periorbital cosmetic work. Not medical treatment. You made me miss my son’s surgery for that.”

Vanessa’s face twisted. “Gavin, I just didn’t want you to think I wasn’t important. I’ve had to fight for everything alone, my whole life.”

Gavin laughed—a sound more broken than crying. “So my son deserves what he got?”

Vanessa’s tears spilled. “I never said that.”

“You did.” He stared at her. “I just used to pretend I didn’t hear.”

Vanessa never made it overseas.

The evidence I submitted was more thorough than Gavin ever expected.

She’d falsified an anxiety disorder diagnosis to get hospital assistance.

She’d misrepresented her cosmetic procedure as a medical necessity.

She’d used Gavin’s signature to secure sponsorship.

And that twenty-thousand-dollar guarantee? She’d transferred half of it to some man Gavin didn’t know.

When Gavin went to her apartment, the door was cracked open.

A man’s laugh drifted out. “That doctor still sending you

money?”

Vanessa’s voice was lazy. “Of course. Men like him are easy. Big on responsibility, cares about his reputation, can’t stand to see me cry.”

The man snorted. “Heard his kid almost went blind.”

Vanessa laughed coldly. “Almost? Please. That kid was already a little blind mess. It was the mom that bugged me—acting like she was the real deal.”

“And Gavin’s a fool—one little ‘I’m scared’ from me and he’s out the door, skipping his own kid’s operation. Men like that? They get what they deserve.”

Gavin stood outside.

His fingers curled into fists.

Before, he’d have kicked the door in, demanded answers, lost his mind.

But this time, he didn’t.

He pulled out his phone and hit record.

The whole thing.

The next day, the hospital hearing.

Vanessa sat in the front row, pale-faced but still playing the victim.

“I admit there were paperwork irregularities. But I had no bad intentions. Dr. Hastings helped me out of professional courtesy.”

Gavin stood.

He handed the recording to the staff.

On the big screen, Vanessa’s voice filled the conference room.

“Men like him are easy.”

“Little blind thing.”

“Men like that deserve to lose everything.”

The room went dead silent.

Vanessa shot to her feet. “No! That’s fabricated!”

Gavin looked at her. “Who are you still trying to fool?”

Vanessa unraveled completely.

She pointed at Gavin and screamed, “Gavin, don’t play the good guy now! Did I force you to skip the OR? Did I force you to cancel the consult? Did I force you to stamp my forms before your kid in the ER? Your son’s condition—that’s on you!”

Gavin stood there. He had no rebuttal. Because she was right.

Vanessa was cruel. But he was the one who handed her the knife.

The hearing results came fast.

Vanessa lost her fellowship.

Investigation for fraud and misappropriation was referred to the authorities.

Gavin was suspended. Clinical privileges revoked.

The hospital scrubbed his profile from the website. The doctor everyone once praised became the hospital’s laughingstock.

The director handed him the disciplinary notice and said only: “Gavin, before you ask if you can still be a doctor, ask yourself if you even deserve to be a father.”

Gavin looked down at the notice.

Every line on it looked like the black pages of Eli’s sketchbook.

He remembered something from long ago.

Eli had just learned to walk and tripped in the living room.

Gavin was texting Vanessa.

Eli sobbed for his dad.

Gavin didn’t even look up. “Boys—falling’s no big deal.”

Later, Vanessa sent a crying emoji.

He replied: [Don’t worry. I’m coming.]

It hadn’t started on surgery day.

He’d lost Eli’s father, piece by piece, for years.

Gavin submitted his resignation.

The director refused it. “The investigation’s not over. You don’t get to walk away.”

So he was suspended, stuck at home.
