He Missed His Son’s Eye Surgery For Her Follow-Up Visit Chapter 05

The day before we left, Eli woke up pale.

He sat on his bed, both hands pressed over his right eye.

“Mommy, my eye feels tight.”

His voice was so small.

I scooped him up and drove straight to Gavin’s hospital.

The ER eye clinic was packed.

The nurse ran the preliminary scan and her face dropped.
“Pressure’s dangerously high. How long since his surgery?”

*Three months.*

The nurse stood. “Dr. Hastings’s on today. I’ll get him.”

I sat in the hallway with Eli in my lap.

He leaned against me, cold sweat beading on his forehead.
“Mommy, will Daddy come?”

I stroked his head. “A doctor will come.”

I didn’t dare say “Daddy.”

A few minutes later, Gavin appeared from his exam room.

He spotted us immediately. “What are you two doing here?”

I handed him the lab sheet. “Eli’s pressure is off the charts. The nurse said he needs treatment now.”

Gavin looked at the numbers.

His expression flickered.

He understood.

Of course he understood.

Then the door next to him opened.

Vanessa stepped out in sunglasses, holding a report that needed a stamp.

*Gavin, my eyes are killing me from the dilation. The doctor says I need a specialist note for my periorbital repair record, or the foreign board won’t accept it.*

I looked at her. “Periorbital repair?”

Vanessa’s face tensed.

Gavin looked away.

It clicked.

Her “post-op checkup” wasn’t a medical procedure.

It was cosmetic—periorbital aesthetic work before she left the country.

I held Eli tighter. *Gavin, Eli can’t wait.”

Gavin paused for two seconds. *Claire, take him into the waiting room. I’ll stamp Vanessa’s report and be right there.”

I couldn’t believe it. *You know what these pressure numbers

mean.”

Gavin lowered his voice. “I know.”

“And you’re still making him wait?”

He glanced around, irritation bleeding into his tone. “This is a hospital. Don’t make a scene. Vanessa’s paperwork has to go out today or she misses her flight. I’ll get to Eli. It’s not like he’s going blind this second.”

Eli shuddered in my arms.

He heard.

He understood “blind.”

Vanessa tugged Gavin’s sleeve. “Gavin, maybe see Eli first.”

Her voice was soft. But her eyes landed on me.

For a split second, her lips twitched upward.

Gavin, predictably, softened toward her.

“Don’t worry about it. Go inside.”

As he guided her back into the exam room, his voice was feather-light.

“Don’t be scared. I’m here.”

That line.

The same line he never said to his son on surgery day.

I picked up Eli and ran straight to the nurse’s station.
“Switch doctors. Now.”

The nurse paged the attending on call.

Halfway through the exam, Eli let out a piercing scream.

Then his whole body locked up.

His hands clamped over his eye, his mouth opened, but no sound came.

“Eli?” I shook his face. “Eli, talk to Mommy!”

He looked at me. Or tried to.

His pupils weren’t tracking.

And no sound left his throat.

Ten minutes later, the attending walked out with the scans.

His gaze was heavy. “Mrs. Hastings, brace yourself.”

I leaned against the wall. “Tell me.”

“The optic nerve in his right eye was compressed too long. There may be permanent visual field loss.”

My ears rang.

He continued: “He’s also experiencing stress-induced mutism. He’ll need long-term psychological intervention to speak again.”

At the other end of the hall, Gavin finally emerged.

He handed Vanessa her stamped report, voice soft. “Don’t worry. Your paperwork’s fine.”

I held Eli—my son who couldn’t make a sound anymore—and looked at Gavin’s face, the one everyone called warm and dependable.

Then I texted my lawyer.

[File the petition now. Request visitation restriction. Request termination of paternal medical decision-making authority. Submit all evidence.]

Gavin spotted me and hurried over. “Claire, how’s Eli?”

I looked up.
No tears.
No yelling.

Just one sentence, word by word.

“Gavin, you’re not blind to him. You’re the one who pushed him into the hell.”
