The video showed Lila hanging out with several of her friends.

She lounged on the couch with a beer in her hand, rolling her eyes as she spoke.

“Megan, that idiot, actually asked me for a birthday present. She really thinks she’s something

special.”

“I only hang out with her so I can pry Elise’s secrets out of her. Besides, she’s ugly and out of shape, so standing next to her makes me look even better. As if someone like her deserves to be my

friend.”

“Ryan’s best friend is broke and pathetic. He’ll spend his whole life as someone else’s lackey”

“And Ryan’s sister is shameless. She’s almost thirty-five, still single, and still living in the family home while mooching off her brother. She’s a total leech. Ryan’s money is my money, so why should she get to spend any of it? The second we’re married, I’m throwing her out.”

She had trashed every single person in the room.

The screen went dark as Lila let out a twisted scream.

The expressions of everyone who had defended her only moments earlier turned thunderous.

None of them had imagined that beneath Lila’s sweet, harmless facade, she was this vicious and

calculating.

Even Ryan staggered backward in disbelief.

The bouquet fell from his hand and struck the floor. He stared at Lila as if she were a complete

stranger, fear filling his eyes.

“Lila, those people are my closest friends and my family. How could you say those things about

them?”

“You’re terrifying.”

Lila shook her head desperately, tears filling her eyes. Before she could explain, Megan tackled her

to the floor.

Straddling Lila, Megan slapped her across the face and tore at her wedding dress.

“I treated you like a friend, and this is what you really thought of me?”

“You bitch! Who are you calling ugly and out of shape? You two-faced piece of trash! I’ll kill you!”

Ryan’s sister and the others watched with grim satisfaction. Several of them rolled up their sleeves, eager to join in.

Afraid someone might actually die, I spoke into my earpiece.

“The suspects are fighting. Move in now.”

A team of officers rushed through the ballroom doors and broke up the fight.

Within seconds, Lila and Megan were both wearing matching silver handcuffs.

Ryan looked confused.

“Officer, thank you for stepping in, but this was only a fight. Was handcuffing them really necessary?”

The detective gave him a cold look.

“Who said they were being arrested for fighting?”

“Our investigation found that Lila Bennett and Megan Collins deliberately provoked Linda Carter in her hospital room, triggering the medical crisis that killed her. Afterward, they unlawfully removed her body from the hospital and kept it frozen in a used chest freezer in the basement of one of their homes.”

“They’re being arrested for murder, unlawful removal and concealment of human remains, and abuse of a corpse.”

A group of people moved together to block my path.

Ryan stood at the front.

He looked at me with regret filling his eyes, then dropped to one knee.

“I’m sorry, Elise. I trusted the wrong person and hurt you.”

“You’re going to bring Mrs. Carter home, aren’t you? I’ll go with you. After all these years, I’ve long

thought of her as my own mother. Come on. Let’s bring Mom home.”

Ryan’s sister wiped away her tears and tried to reason with me.

“This isn’t my brother’s fault. That bitch was too calculating and fooled all of us. Elise, a man who

finally comes to his senses deserves a second chance. Listen to me and forgive Ryan this once. He’ll

treat you twice as well from now on.”

The rest of our mutual friends joined in.

“Elise, we’re sorry.”

“We had no idea Lila was this evil. She fooled all of us. Please forgive us.”

“You and Ryan made it through twelve years together. You can’t throw all of that away overnight. Give him another chance. We all want to see the two of you happy.”

“Exactly. Once you get married, our whole group can go back to spending time together.”

I looked coldly over their hypocritical, revolting faces.

The man I had loved for twelve years had spent eight of them cheating on me.

My best friend, Ryan’s sister, whom I had respected, and every friend I had ever helped had all

chosen to help the two of them hide the truth from me.

Whatever bond I had shared with them ended the moment Ryan betrayed me and they knowingly

helped him conceal it.

Not one of them deserved the genuine care I had given them.

“Get lost.”

The crowd wisely parted and cleared a path for me.

I walked away without looking back.

Once the police recovered my mother’s remains, I brought her home to Cedar Ridge.
