Taped underneath it was a brand-new gold ring.

So he had noticed the ring was bent that day after all.

He just hadn’t cared.

I put everything back in the box and handed it to the driver. “Return this to sender.”

“From now on, return every package this sender sends me.”

After Mom was discharged, I took her to my father’s house before bringing her to the new place I had found.

The house had been put back the way it was, and the property manager came by with security and gifts to

apologize.

After they left, Mom took my hand.

“What happened between you and Ethan?”

Knowing I couldn’t avoid it, I took a deep breath.

“We got divorced.”

“Are you going to blame me?”

Mom closed her eyes, and tears ran down her cheeks.

“What would I be angry at you for?”

“I’m angry at myself for growing old and useless. Your marriage was unhappy, and I made you afraid to tell

me.”

“You aren’t going to tell me to put up with it for Mason’s sake?”

Mom reached up and stroked my face.

“If my baby is the one who’s hurting, who will care?”

I couldn’t hold back my sobs anymore.

“Mom, I’ll be okay.”

Once Mom was stable, I started sending out resumes everywhere.

Ethan hadn’t been wrong. With my circumstances, getting back into the workforce really was difficult.

Before I got married, I had graduated from one of the country’s top universities.

I had already been building my resume through internships during my senior year.

The year I graduated, job offers had poured in.

After I got married, I became a stay-at-home mother.

At home, I’d been expected to do everything. Once I stepped outside, I seemed qualified to do nothing.

Just when I was starting to lose hope, a startup run entirely by women invited me to interview.

The CEO herself was interviewing me.

She set my resume aside.

“Divorced, with a child?”

My voice came out hoarse. “Yes. My son lives with his father.”

“How old is he?”

“Four. He won’t interfere with my work.”

Ms. Blake leaned back. “Come in tomorrow for a trial day and see how it goes.”

“Even if it doesn’t work out, we’ll pay you for the day.”

“But there is one issue you may not be comfortable with.”

My eyes immediately lit up.

“If you’ll give me a chance to try, I’ll accept anything.”

Ms. Blake handed me a photograph.

“This is my daughter. She just turned four too.”

“We’re a startup, so besides handling my work as my assistant, you may occasionally need to pick up my

daughter.”

“Any time you spend with her will be paid as overtime. I just don’t want the extra work to be too much for

you.”

“If that works for you, come in tomorrow, Monday afternoon, and start by picking her up.”

When I got the address, I went still for a moment.

My son attended the same preschool.

The next day, I stood outside the preschool right on time.

To my surprise, Mason was the first child out.

When he saw me, he froze too.

Then his brows pulled into a hard frown.

“You’re a horrible woman! You drove Aunt Chloe away and made Dad unhappy all the time!”

“I’m not going home with you! I’ll never forgive you!”

I didn’t answer.

A small figure suddenly ran into my arms.

Sophie, Ms. Blake’s daughter, wrapped her arms around my legs and shouted:

“Are you the new lady who’s going to pick me up? I like you!”

Mason froze where he stood.
