“Who taught you to talk like that?”

Mason immediately burst into tears.

Chloe chided him, “Why are you suddenly being so harsh? You scared him.”

“Don’t cry, Mason. Aunt Chloe won’t let your mean mom take you away.”

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Chloe, I’ll say it one more time. Bring Mason home now.”

“You just need to follow instructions. This is a family matter, not yours.”

“Don’t let me hear you say anything about my wife again.”

After hanging up, Ethan rubbed his brow and hired an investigator to find me.

By the time he gave the investigator every clue he had, it was late at night.

The investigator said the earliest he’d have an answer was the next day.

Ethan had no choice but to go home and rest first.

The moment he opened the door, he heard Chloe laughing inside.

She was wearing my robe, holding a wineglass, and video-calling several other employees from the primary

bedroom.

The coworker on the other end gushed enviously, “Chloe, did you really land Ethan?”

“Don’t say that. He’s still fighting with his wife over the divorce.”

“He even took it out on me today and told me to stop talking about his family.”

The coworker teased her:

“Everyone knows Ethan never lets his feelings show. He acts indifferent about everything. If he took his

anger out on you, it means he sees you as one of his own.”

Chloe clearly liked what she heard.

“Of course he does. His calendar even gives me first booking priority.”

“For years, his wife has booked him down to the second and still ended up one second behind me.”

“He even cleared out his father-in-law’s house and let me live there. How much longer until I’m living in his

actual home?”

The coworker immediately played along:

“Then I need to start practicing calling you Mrs. Carter.”

“We started at the company together. Now that you’re moving up, don’t forget me!”

Ethan couldn’t listen anymore. He shoved the door open.
