He Made Every Choice for Twenty Years Then I Chose Divorce Chapter 05

On the other side, Ethan was yawning behind the wheel. He’d spent half the night undoing most of

the plans. He glanced at Maya, who was staring out the passenger window. “What do you feel like

eating? We’ll grab Celia and get lunch.”

Maya twisted her seatbelt. “Maybe ask Celia this time. She seems… different.”

Ethan laughed. “Different? She’s been a pushover her whole life-she’ll blow up and get over it.

He pulled into the office complex and texted: [I’m downstairs. When you coming down?]

No reply. He sent a few more. Nothing. He frowned and called. Straight to voicemail. He stared at the screen, the lazy grin finally fading. “Still mad?”

He got out and walked to the lobby. The receptionist recognized him. “You’re Celia’s boyfriend?”

He nodded. Her smile tightened. “Celia left two days ago didn’t you know? She transferred overseas with Ms. Harwood. Aren’t you her boyfriend? How do you not know?”

Ethan stood there, frozen, unable to speak for a long moment. Then he fumbled for his phone, scrolled to Celia’s chat-green bubbles filled his side, hers blank.

Maya had gotten out and stood behind him. She saw his hand shake. “Ethan?”

He didn’t turn. His voice cracked. “She’s gone.”

Maya tugged his shirt. “Gone where?” He gripped the phone, turned, and stared at her, eyes

bloodshot.

“She left me. She meant it. She’s not coming back.” His voice broke. He jabbed a finger at her. “This is your fault if you hadn’t stuck your nose into everything, she’d never have been that cruel!”

Maya went white. “Ethan, what are you saying? You’re blaming me?”

His voice rose. “Shouldn’t I? It’s our wedding, but you picked the decor, the flowers, the jewelry-”

His voice dropped, and his eyes reddened. He couldn’t go on. He remembered the things Celia had asked for. Red roses. A big TV.

But somehow, every time, it ended up being what Maya wanted. It was Celia’s wedding-she was the bride-and he’d let someone else decide everything. His hand trembled, the screen flickering

on his face.

Maya wiped her tears and slammed her purse into his chest. “Ethan, you have no right. You gave ne ene that power. If you’d asked her once, looked at her once, thought of her once-I wouldn’t have had to

do it. I’m human too-I-”

She bit her lip, stopping herself. But Ethan understood. He stared at her like she was a stranger. Maya shook, tears falling harder. “I knew it was your wedding. I picked the house, the planner-I told myself I was helping. But really I just wanted…”

She crouched down, shoulders heaving. Ethan stumbled back, gave a pale, hollow laugh. He was the idiot. He deserved it. No wonder she’d dropped him so cleanly. But still-he had to get her back.
