He Loved My Fake Self Chapter 13

The room was drowning in flowers. Banners with my name. Stacks of gift boxes not even arranged yet

I ducked behind a balloon arch without thinking.

Peyton was calmly adjusting some balloons, a dry laugh escaping him. “Honestly, I felt kind of guilty setting

Kyle up with Clover at first.

“He got arrested in high school. But once I figured out what kind of person Clover was, I made my peace with

They’re a good match.”
Jolene hummed proudly, adjusting the cake. She scanned the room, satisfied, and high-fived him.

“With the two of us as strategists, it’s a done deal.

“Clover’s a super introvert. We packed this room with people-when Kyle confesses, it’s basically throwing

her into a spotlight. She’ll be too embarrassed to say no.”

She giggled.

“You don’t even know how bad it is. She crushed on some guy for two years and never even said a word to

him.”

She stopped mid-sentence. Face shifting. Topic change, fast.

“Where’s your phone? Call your friends. Tell them to come to this room.”

Peyton patted his pockets. “Must’ve left it somewhere while I was helping Kyle set up.”

His gaze landed on my phone on the table. He grabbed it without a second thought.

“Kyle’s so nervous he forgot to take his phone when he went to get Clover.”

I was still behind the arch, one step from stepping out.

Peyton unlocked the screen effortlessly.

“Lockscreen is a photo of her. Passcode is her birthday. Everyone in the dorm knows that.”

He opened Facebook.

His smile froze.

He backed out. Searched his own name. Scrolled.

Flipped the phone over. Checked the case.

His voice came out hoarse.

“Whose phone is this?”

Then he turned. Slowly. Saw me standing there.

“Clover. This… is this your phone?”
