He Left Me Waiting for Three Years. So I Left Him Forever Chapter 11

Late one night, my phone rang.

It was Ethan.

“Who’s calling, honey?” Daniel asked.

“Ethan Carter.”

Daniel paused for a moment.

“Answer it. It might be an emergency.”

I answered.

“Claire.”

“Yes. Did something happen?”

“Claire, I’m so tired.”

His voice was hoarse, as though he hadn’t spoken in days.

Daniel opened Serena’s latest video on his phone.

In the footage, Serena had lost control again. She held a knife to her throat, threatening to hurt herself if

Ethan tried to leave.

They were inside the Southport house they had once shared. Broken objects and overturned furniture littered

the room, making it clear that a violent confrontation had taken place.

“Claire, I regret everything,” Ethan said.

“It’s late. You should get some sleep.”

“Three years ago, I didn’t leave you because I loved Serena. “I left because I couldn’t accept that Serena had

walked away from me.”

“I wanted to prove to her what she had given up and show her how well I could treat her.”

His breathing grew uneven.

“But I was wrong. I never imagined proving myself to her would cost me you.”

“It’s over now. Serena still needs you.”

“I’ve lost everything,” he whispered. “There’s nothing left.”

His muffled sobs continued on the other end of the line.

Daniel eventually took the phone from my hand.

“Mr. Carter, you’re disturbing my wife.”

Ethan’s crying stopped abruptly.

“You… got married?”

“Yes,” I said. “We got married two years ago, and we have a daughter now. We’re very happy.”

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“Mr. Carter, my wife is a wonderful woman. I know exactly how special she is. But that doesn’t give you the

right to keep holding on to her.”

“Please don’t call her again.”

Two weeks later, one final update appeared on Serena’s vlog account.

It was an obituary.

[Serena Collins passed away due to complications from organ rejection.]

Ethan arranged the funeral and stood before everyone as Serena’s husband.

There was no visible grief on his face, only the numb exhaustion of a man worn down by years of caring for

someone who was gravely ill.

He stood calmly at the front of the chapel, but the words he delivered sounded more like his own obituary

than hers.

“My name is Ethan Carter. I was Serena Collins’s husband. Thank you all for coming to my wife’s funeral.”

“She didn’t love me, and I didn’t love her. She needed someone to stay beside her and take care of her. That

was all.”

‘Because of her, I lost the woman who loved me more than anyone.”

“Because of her, I gave up my career.”

“For her, I gave everything I had. My conscience is clear.”

Someone recorded his speech and uploaded it online.

Some people called him a sucker who had let himself be used. Others called him a selfish husband who had

betrayed his wife.

Most people simply called him a fool.

Daniel walked over and gently took my phone away.

“That’s enough of that. What do you want for dinner?”

“What about our daughter?”

“She’ll be perfectly happy with cheesy scrambled eggs. You’re the one whose opinion matters.”

I thought for a moment.

“How about crispy salt–and–pepper shrimp?”

“Whatever my wife wants.”

The setting sun washed the balcony in warm light as green vines climbed freely over the railing.

They were wild, thriving, and full of life.

And my story was still unfolding.
