It was true.

He hadn’t been back in a long time.

After Ava woke up, he should have spent more time with her.

But Piper was always calling, saying their son was crying, that she couldn’t handle it alone. Every time he planned to return to the estate, something would hold him back.

He raised a hand to his brow, about to call his lawyer, when the housekeeper spoke again.

“Sir, there’s a lawyer at the door. He says he needs to see you.”

Before Graham could make the call, the lawyer was walking in. He placed a folder on the cold marble coffee table.

“Mr. Lockwood, I’ve been retained by Miss Hart to deliver the final divorce agreement and the notice for the court hearing.”

Graham didn’t reach for it. He just lifted his eyes, the chill in them enough to make the man’s blood run cold.

“Where did this come from?” Graham cut him off.

“You helped Ava forge documents to deceive me? You have a lot of nerve.”

He snatched the papers from the table, tore them in half, and threw them at the lawyer.

The lawyer’s face paled, but he maintained his professional composure.

“Mr. Lockwood, I would never dare to deceive you. This document is entirely legal.”

“It was submitted to the court under Miss Hart’s authority, based on the authorization documents you personally signed.”

“You are welcome to verify it yourself.”

Graham sneered.

“When did I ever sign—”

He stopped mid-sentence.

He remembered.

A month ago, late at night. Piper had called, hysterical, saying their son had a fever and could barely breathe.

He had been about to leave when Ava came out of the study holding a stack of papers.

“Graham, some quarterly foundation documents need both our signatures.”

The room had been dim. His mind had been on the phone call. He hadn’t even looked at what he was signing, just scribbled his name where she pointed.

So those pages had been the authorization for her lawyer to file for divorce.
