Tiffany smiled, triumphant.

The men behind her grew restless with excitement.

“There goes my ten million.”

“If I’d known Derek was this whipped, I never would’ve made that bet.”

“Guess I’ll have to be first in line to get my money’s worth out of you later.”

Derek held a cigar between his fingers, a smirk playing on his lips.

“I’m not done with her yet, and you’re already forming a line?”

“Then I’ll just have to ask Tiffany,” one of them shot back.

“You listen to her. If she gives the okay, you won’t say no.”

“Right, Tiffany?”

Tiffany turned to Derek with a saccharine smile.

“Derek, promise me.”

“Today’s wedding was just for show, but I’m still pissed off.”

“You and Claire are done. Here. Now.”

“Fine. Anything for you.”

They thought money and connections gave them the right to decide other people’s fates.

That a person’s dignity was something to be trampled on at will.

My stepmother’s family taught me to strike fast.

Derek taught me something new: revenge should be even harsher.

“Claire, I did like you once.”

“But a name like yours can only get you so far.”

“So don’t blame me.”

“If you have to blame someone, blame yourself for not being born into the right family.”

Someone crushed a cockroach under his shoe, then picked up the mangled body and threw it at my face.

They just wanted to provoke me.

The more I flinched, the faster the foam disappeared.

I met each of their gazes, carving every single face into my memory.

“You will all pay for this.”
