He Killed Us Both Chapter 04

He Killed Us Both Chapter 04

I struggled to my feet on the cold marble, my movements stiff and broken. Blood dripped from my forehead into my eyes, but I didn’t wipe it away. I clutched my handbag tightly against my flat abdomen-the place that had been my son’s tomb-and stared at Linus with pure venom. 1

“The baby?” My voice was like a rusty scalpel. “How touching. The city’s revered Don actually cares about some bastard’s whereabouts? Your concern is unnecessary. He’s ashes. He died in that car crash while you and your precious adopted sister were playing hero.”

“And congratulations, by the way. Enjoy your happiness. Soon, you’ll be seeing your sweetheart through visitation glass, assuming the FBI allows it.”

Linus’s face twisted, fury contorting his handsome features.

“Do you have to speak with such venom? I am the Don-protecting the family is my duty. I didn’t press charges against you for staging a car crash. I saved Lydia. And now you blame me?”

“You have no right to speak to me like that! Who the hell do you think you are?” He stalked closer, a wild suspicion flaring in his eyes. “What happened to the baby? Which safe house did you hide him in?” His fingers twitched. “Listen to me-I am his father. That is an immutable law. Even if you secretly gave birth to him today, I will find you, and I will take him from you!”

This was what he thought of me. Our whole marriage was a sick joke.

He steadied Lydia, looking like he was about to lunge over and rip open my coat. But Lydia let out a perfectly timed cry of pain, clutching her cheek. He immediately turned back to her, all tender concern, leaving me bleeding alone on the steps.

“Are you hurt? Where? Let me get you to a doctor,” he cooed.

“I’m fine,” she sobbed beautifully. “Don’t be angry with Cassandra, Linus. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have gone to the garage.”

Then she turned to me, her eyes flashing with venom. “But Cassandra, the child wasn’t just yours. How could you get an abortion behind Linus’s back? You’re so heartless. That was a living soul, not some toy for you to throw away!”

Linus’s grief was instantly ignited by fresh fury. He whipped around to face me, his eyes red and bloodshot, his face a mask of insanity. “You killed him? You dared to abort my heir?”

“You blind fool,” I laughed, a bitter, broken sound. “You just pushed me down a flight of stairs-are you going to apologize for that? What right do you have to call yourself a father? Is it because you abandoned your wife and child in a burning wreck? Or because you spent months wrapped around your adopted sister’s finger while your son was dying?”

His brow furrowed, his body trembling with rage. “You-carrying my heir-deliberately wrecked a car to murder Lydia!”

“I gave you a week to cool down, and you’re still this blind? You’re a lost cause.”

“You selfish, vicious woman-you don’t deserve to be a mother! When the baby is born, I will raise him alone. If you’re nice to Lydia, maybe I’ll allow you visitation. Otherwise, you will never see him again!”

His roars echoed across the square. Passersby stopped, recognizing the infamous Don. They gathered around, the flashes of their phones incessant.

Lydia seized the moment. “Cassandra,” she cried, her voice trembling with false pity, “I know you hate me, but think of the baby. You crashed the car while you were pregnant -I can forgive you for that, but please, don’t be so angry. It’s not good for the fetus!”

The crowd erupted.

“Isn’t that the woman from online? The psycho who staged the car crash?”

“She tried to run someone over while pregnant-unforgivable!”

“That poor child, having a mother like that is the worst kind of luck. God, where is her punishment?”

Curses rained down on me.

Linus stood tall, basking in the crowd’s support, not making the slightest move to defend me. Arrogant. Smug.

“I said-apologize!” he thundered.

“Gladly,” I snarled. “Right after she kneels at my son’s grave and begs for his forgiveness.”

“Unreasonable! Incorrigible!”

“I was blind to have ever married you! The annulment-we’re getting it now!”

A triumphant glint shone in Lydia’s eyes.

I said nothing. I just brushed the dust from my knees, walked up the steps, and entered the restaurant.

Inside, our lawyers were waiting. They greeted Linus with sympathetic glances, as if dissolving our marriage was a great relief for him. But they weren’t alone. Reporters they had clearly tipped off aimed their cameras at me, filming from every angle, ready to broadcast my humiliation across the city.

When we came out, Linus didn’t spare me a glance. He wrapped an arm around Lydia and strode toward his Bentley, eager to escape.

He didn’t ask about the baby again. He had never truly cared.

I stood alone on the steps, bleeding, surrounded by the hatred of the crowd.
