He Introduced Me to a Lover, and My First Love Walked In Chapter 03

Julian’s brows drew together, and his eyes burned with anger.

He immediately turned on me. “Audrey, Chloe only borrowed some clothes. Why are you giving her such a hard time?”

That was a relief. For a second, I’d thought Julian was angry because I didn’t care about the vase anymore.

Even at the worst of our fights, when I’d trashed nearly the entire house, I’d never been able to bring myself to touch that vase.

I let out a quiet breath. “I’m not giving Chloe a hard time. She’s welcome to anything in my closet. She can take whatever she likes.”

Julian’s expression darkened even further. His jaw clenched as he strode over to Chloe, took her hand, and snapped at me, “Audrey, you really think Chloe needs anything of yours? She’s carrying my child. I’ll buy her the best of everything.”

Then he told the driver to bring the car around and contacted the client advisors at the major luxury boutiques.

I wasn’t surprised in the slightest.

Julian and I had been married long enough to have more than a few things in common.

For one, we both loved picking out clothes for the people we cared about.

We used to do it for each other. Now I was doing it for Evan, while Julian was doing the same for Chloe.

My lack of reaction only made Julian angrier.

He grabbed Chloe’s hand and marched away, too furious to notice that she could barely keep up and stumbled several times.

I didn’t have time to worry about what was going on with them. I turned to Evan, took his hand, and asked, “Are you hungry?”

Evan shook his head.

I looked at him, unsure where to begin.

There were so many things I wanted to ask, but I couldn’t bring myself to say any of them. I was afraid of reopening old wounds, and just as afraid that he wouldn’t want to tell me anything at all.

Maybe everyone became this nervous and sensitive around someone they loved.

Evan seemed to understand what I was thinking. After following me around in silence all day, he finally spoke.

His voice was slightly hoarse. “Sweetheart, I’m thirsty.”

Evan was technically younger than me, but only by fifteen days. We’d grown up together, and he had never once acted like the younger one—if anything, he was always the one teasing me and bossing me around.

Hearing that endearment from him sent heat rushing to my face and made my heart race. Every question I’d been about to ask vanished from my mind.

“I’ll get you something to drink,” I blurted before practically fleeing the room.

I hid in the butler’s pantry until I finally calmed down. Once I had, I made him a cup of tea and brought it back.

Evan lowered his head as he drank, his long lashes casting shadows over his cheeks. He looked almost impossibly sweet.

I asked the housekeeper to make him something to eat.

Evan seemed distracted and barely touched his food.

I assumed he was tired, so I showed him to a guest room to rest. Just as I was about to leave, he caught my fingers.

His dark eyes stayed fixed on mine as he murmured, “Stay with me, sweetheart.”

Then he leaned into my hand, his cheek brushing lightly over the back of it.

I had absolutely no defense against that.

I stayed with him until he fell asleep, then quietly slipped out of the room.

Instead of going back to my bedroom, I headed to the kitchen.

Evan had barely eaten that afternoon, and I was worried he might wake up hungry, so I made him a late-night snack.

I’d just finished cooking and was about to carry the food to Evan’s room when I turned around and realized Julian had come home.

He stood just outside the kitchen, watching me. I had no idea how long he’d been there.
