He Had Time for Everything but Me Chapter 05

The phone chimed and lit up.

Grant reached for it, but Vanessa snatched it away and placed it facedown on the bed. Then she wrapped her legs around him.

“It must be Claire asking you to come home. Don’t look. You’ll ruin the mood.”

She turned on the charm, trying to draw him back in.

A deafening crack of thunder split the air.

Grant pulled away. “No. I need to check on Claire.”

“She’s already upset after finding out about us. Thunder this loud will scare her.”

Vanessa frowned. “We’re married now. Shouldn’t we be enjoying our wedding night?”

Grant had already finished dressing. “Come on. We still need her to carry our baby.”

“If she’s upset, the IVF is less likely to work.”

Vanessa’s expression softened. She climbed out of bed and said, “Fine. I’ll go with you.”

“You’re right. I still need her to carry our baby.”

She stood on tiptoe, kissed him, and beamed.

But worry flickered in Grant’s eyes.

He didn’t know why, but his heart suddenly felt hollow, as if something important had slipped away.

Thunder rolled overhead as rain poured outside.

Traffic barely moved.

Bored in the passenger seat, Vanessa tried to message Claire, only to discover that Claire had blocked her.

She scoffed. “Claire’s really throwing a fit this time. She blocked me.”

Grant froze and immediately checked his own account.

He saw the last message I had sent him.

Claire: [I wish you both happiness.]

He frowned and tried to reply, but the message wouldn’t deliver.

His heart sank. “Claire has never blocked me before. She must be seriously angry this time.”

Vanessa propped her feet up on the dashboard, unconcerned. “She could never bring herself to leave you.

You’ve been together for years. Last time you ignored her for two weeks, she still couldn’t even bring herself

to talk about breaking up.”

Grant stared at the unmoving line of cars ahead.

Then he glanced at Vanessa.

“Vanessa, how did Claire know about our wedding today?”

Her gaze wavered before she looked over at him.

“How would I know? She’s my best friend. Why would I tell her?”

“Maybe she overheard something when you weren’t paying attention.”

Grant pressed his lips into a thin line.

Traffic finally started moving, but the road ahead was still badly backed up.

His expression darkened. He jerked the steering wheel and turned onto a side road.

The road was narrow, with weeds growing thickly along both sides.

Vanessa cried out in fear, “Grant! Why are you driving so fast? You’re going to send us into a ditch!”

He remained silent and pressed harder on the gas.

The car picked up speed.

Less than ten minutes later, he slammed on the brakes outside the house.

Grant hurried out of the car and saw that the lights were on inside.

The tension in his chest slowly eased.

Vanessa rushed over with an umbrella and punched him hard in the chest.

“Are you insane? You drove that fast in this rain and jumped out of the car without even waiting for me.”

“Look at you-you’re soaked, I know you’re worried about Claire, but you can’t risk your life like that! You’re

impossible!”

Grant’s expression softened. “I’m sorry, I overreacted.”

A jealous look crossed her face. “You’re not actually in love with Claire, are you?”

“Don’t forget, you’re only keeping her happy so she’ll go through with the IVF and have our baby!”

Grant was silent for three seconds before answering quietly, “Yeah.”

“Since we’re already here, you can stay the night.”

Vanessa gave him a coy smile. “Aren’t you worried Claire will get angry when she sees us?”

Grant headed toward the house. “No. Claire loves me.”

Before opening the door, he’d already decided that if Claire refused to hand over the baby, he’d let her raise

the child herself and name Vanessa as the godmother.

But when he opened the door, the entire house was empty.
