He pushed Chloe’s arms away and put on his coat.

“Ethan!”

He ignored her, slamming the door on his way out.

He hadn’t been back to the Fifth Avenue penthouse in almost a week. The silence was unnerving.

The air didn’t smell of Amelia’s usual white tea scent, and there were no fresh flowers on the coffee table—the ones she replaced every week without fail.

A knot tightened in Ethan’s chest.

When he pushed open the master bedroom door and saw the empty walk-in closet, that unease sharpened into something closer to alarm.

Amelia’s half of the closet was bare. Her clothes, handbags, shoes—all gone. The vanity was wiped clean, as if no one had ever used it.

She’d really moved out?

Ethan strode to the safe in the closet where Amelia had kept her jewelry. He yanked the door open. It was empty.

Still not wanting to believe it, he pulled open the drawer beneath the safe.

At the very back of the empty jewelry box, his fingers brushed against a small metal object.

A ring.

He remembered.

The day they signed the divorce agreement, Amelia had calmly slid it off her finger and placed it on the table.

He hadn’t picked it up. Hadn’t even looked at it.

He’d always believed Amelia could never truly leave him. She had invested too much in this family, in the title of “Mrs. Sterling.” How could she just walk away?

Ethan picked up the ring, rubbing it lightly with his thumb.

He’d bought it in college with the bonus from his first internship.

This ring meant something to them. To both of them.

So she couldn’t really be done.

She must have left it by mistake.

He closed his fist around the ring, and the panic in his chest slowly began to recede.

She still cared.
