There were four cameras on the sidewalk.

I wiped my hands, took off my apron, and went out, because I have learned that the only thing worse than, answering a question is letting someone else answer it for you.

The first one was easy. Chef Quinn, how does it feel?

The second one wasn’t.

“Chef, your ex-husband is currently serving a sentence for aggravated assault, and his restaurant collapsed weeks after you resigned. There’s a theory online that you knew it would fail and left deliberately. Any comment?”

The street got very quiet.

I thought about all the answers I could give. I thought about the woman on the break room floor. Nineteen

minutes.

“Here’s my comment,” I said. “For fifteen years, I ran a kitchen where my name appeared nowhere, my salary was cut to zero, and I was told that was what a good wife does. When I left, I handed over a four-inch binder with every recipe, every contract, and every safety protocol in it, and I got a signature confirming receipt. That building didn’t fall because I left. It fell because it was standing on one person, and everybody had decided that person didn’t count.”

I looked directly into the closest lens.

“If you’re a woman right now holding something up that isn’t yours and you know if you are – then this is the only thing I have to say. They will never see what you do until you stop doing it. And you are allowed to

stop.”

That clip did fourteen million views in a week.

I got eleven thousand emails. I read as many as I could. Two of them were from women who told me they’d resigned the same day they watched it, and one of them, two years later, sent me a photo of her own sign going up on her own building in Portland.

That’s the one I keep on my desk.

Here’s where I am now.

Quinn’s is booked out four months. We were nominated in the spring, and whether or not we win, my thirty-two cooks walked into that ceremony in rented tuxes with their names printed on the program, because I put every single one of them on it.
