He Gave Her My Kitchen. I Took Everything Chapter 07

Ms. Quinn, this is Detective Reyes. A report’s been filed naming you. I’d like you to come in voluntarily and

speak with us.”

I sat up in the dark. “What’s the report?”

“Theft of trade secrets,” he said. “And intentional destruction of commercial property. Specifically, tampering with refrigeration equipment at Whitmore House.”

I actually laughed.

There was a pause on the line, and then, drier: “That’s a fairly common reaction, ma’am.”

“Detective, I’ve been in Coral Bay for eleven days. There are four thousand hotel key-card swipes and a boarding pass to prove it.”

“Then this will be a short conversation.”

I booked the 6:10 a.m. flight.

And here’s the thing – I wasn’t afraid. Not even a little. In my last life, this exact phone call had gutted me. I’d shaken so hard I couldn’t sign my own name, and I’d walked into that building alone, with no lawyer, believing that if I just explained myself, they’d see I was a good person.

This time, I called the attorney I’d retained in March. She met me at the terminal with two coffees and a rolling case file.

“How thick?” I asked.

“Four hundred pages,” she said. “You’re the best-documented client’ I’ve ever had.”

The station smelled like burnt coffee and floor wax.

Grant was already in the lobby.

I almost didn’t recognize him. He’d lost ten pounds in eleven days. His shirt was wrinkled. There was a gray stubble on his jaw that made him look like his own father, and his hands wouldn’t stop moving.

Sienna sat next to him with her knees together and her face the color of raw dough. She was holding her phone against her chest like a hymnal. She didn’t look up once.

Neither of them could hold eye contact with me. Not for a second.

I walked past them to the desk without a word and set down the file.

“Detective Reyes? Nora Quinn. Here’s my flight itinerary, hotel folio, and key-card log. Here’s the signed handover acknowledgment, dated and witnessed, transferring all kitchen operations to Ms. Sienna Cole. Here’s her signature. Here’s the copyright registration for every recipe on the Whitmore House menu, filed in my name in March, which is the opposite of stealing them. And here – “I set down the last stack” – is a Márch email chain in which I request replacement of the walk-in compressor, and Mr. Whitmore denies it in writing.”

Reyes flipped through the first twenty pages standing up. Then he looked at Grant over the top of them for a

long, long moment.

Grant lost it.

“Fine!” He stood up so fast the chair skidded. “Fine, Nora, you win, okay? Just come back with me. Come back to the kitchen today and I’ll withdraw the whole thing, I’ll drop it, I’ll say it was a misunderstanding –

The room went very still.

I turned to Detective Reyes.

“Did you hear that?” I asked. “Because I want to make sure it’s on the record. He just offered to withdraw a criminal report in exchange for my unpaid labor.”

Grant’s mouth was still open.

Reyes set the file down. “Mr. Whitmore, sit down please.”

“Nora – “Grant lunged half a step toward me. “Nora, the gala’s tomorrow, six hundred people, I have nobody, I

have nobody –

I picked up my bag.

“Grant, I’ve told you more times than I can count. I completed the handover. Everything that went wrong happened after I was gone.” I looked at him – really looked, the way you look at a stranger crying in an airport. “If you contact me again, I’m filing for a restraining order.”

I walked out.

He tried to follow me. An officer put a hand flat on his chest and said, “Sir, we’ve got some questions about the report you filed.”

The door closed on the sound of Grant’s voice going up an octave.

Outside, the morning was bright and warm and smelled like the harbor.

My lawyer lit up her phone. “They’ll hold him. Filing a false report in this state is a misdemeanor, but with the

extortion attempt he just made in front of a detective – “She whistled. “Forty-eight to seventy-two hours./

minimum.”

did the math and felt something turn over in my chest.

Seventy-two hours meant Grant Whitmore would be in a holding cell tomorrow night.

Tomorrow night was the Harbor Gala.

Which meant six hundred plates were now, entirely, Sienna’s.
