He Gave Her My Kitchen. I Took Everything Chapter 03

He Gave Her My Kitchen. I Took Everything Chapter 03

They searched my box for eleven minutes.

I walked out of Whitmore House with a coffee mug, my grandmother’s copper pot, and one signed piece of paper.

They kept the knives. They kept the notebooks.

They didn’t understand that the notebooks were just my handwriting. The recipes lived in my hands.

Outside, I stopped on the sidewalk and looked up at the building. Brick, twelve tall windows, the awning I’d picked out. There was a stretch in year two when we couldn’t make payroll and I cashed out my grandmother’s inheritance to cover it — a hundred and eighty thousand dollars, straight into the restaurant account, documented as a shareholder loan I never once asked him to repay.

I’d told myself: when it takes off, it’ll all be worth it. When it takes off, he’ll put my name on something.

He put a twenty-four-year-old on the payroll instead.

I turned around and I did not look back.

Here’s what nobody tells you about chefs: I hadn’t turned my phone off in eleven years. Not on vacation, not in the hospital when my mother had her stroke, not at my own sister’s wedding. There was always a walk-in going warm, a dishwasher no-showing, a delivery short.

That night I went home, packed a bag, and booked a flight to Coral Bay.

Twenty nights. Paid upfront. Nonrefundable, on purpose.

I checked in at ten p.m. local time, walked barefoot down to the water, and posted one photo of the ocean.

Finally have time to myself. It feels incredible.

The messages started within four minutes.

Must be nice. Some of us have a double tonight.

Nora, did you hear? Grant gave everyone raises after you left.

Honestly the vibe in the kitchen is so much lighter now lol

Lighter. Sure. Because the person who said no to bad ideas was gone.

And then, at the top of my feed, Sienna: a photo of herself in whites, arms crossed in front of my pass, caption Day one running the show. Wish me luck!! ?

Grant had liked it. So had the entire front of house.

I put the phone face-down and felt absolutely nothing. Because I already knew what happened to people who got everything they wanted from Grant Whitmore.

I was rinsing salt off my feet when the phone rang. Unknown number.

“Is this Nora Quinn? Chef Quinn?”

“It is.”

“My name’s Daniel Kane. I run Kane Hospitality Group. I heard this morning that you resigned from Whitmore House.”

I sat down slowly on the edge of the bed.

Kane Hospitality. Nine restaurants, two hotels, and the best books in the city — I knew, because I’d studied their filings for years the way other women read novels.

“I’ve eaten at Whitmore House sixteen times,” he said. “And I’ve never once believed Grant Whitmore cooked a single thing on that menu. We’re opening a flagship on the waterfront in the fall. I want you as executive chef. Full creative control, no partner on the pass, and I’ll double whatever he was paying you.”

“He wasn’t paying me anything,” I said.

There was a long pause.

“Then this should be easy,” Daniel Kane said.

I laughed out loud — a real one, the kind that hurt my ribs.

I hung up ten minutes later with a meeting scheduled, a signing bonus discussed, and a lightness in my chest I hadn’t felt since I was twenty-six years old.

I was reaching for the light switch when the phone rang again.

Grant.

I let it go to voicemail. He called back. And back. On the fourth try I picked up, and his voice came through the line at a volume that made the speaker crackle.

“NORA. Where’s the money?”

“What money?”

“Don’t play with me!” Something crashed in the background — a chair, a door. “A hundred and eighty thousand dollars was withdrawn from the operating account at four p.m. today. Four p.m., Nora. Two hours after you walked out of my building.”

I lay back on the hotel bed and looked at the ceiling fan turning slowly above me.

“Oh,” I said. “That.”
