He Gave Her a Million-Dollar House, He Gave Me a 5000 Monthly Allowance Chapter 08

I walked out of the office after work, and Pierce blocked my path.

“Aren’t you going to explain yourself?” He nodded toward the office tower behind me. “Why did you move back to D.C. and take a new job without asking me? What about me? Did you stop thinking about me

entirely?”

His words made no sense. I frowned. “We settled everything when we split up, didn’t we?”

Pierce stared, then let out a bitter laugh. “So you already planned to leave when you gave me that money? I waited for you at home, and all along you’d been plotting your escape.”

I stayed quiet, watching him behaving so irrationally.

I turned to leave. Pierce grabbed both of my arms, his eyes red. “Nicole, have you ever thought about me?

Are we still getting married?”

“Let go of me!” I pulled.free and walked off in the opposite direction.

Pierce didn’t chase me. When I looked down from my apartment window later, he was still standing on the

sidewalk.

That night, Melissa called. Her voice held suppressed rage, mixed with a flicker of panic. “Nicole, is Pierce

with you?”

I said nothing. She pressed harder. “He requested a work trip to D.C. on purpose. He won’t answer my calls or texts. Nicole, this is your doing, isn’t it? Did you lure him here?”

I replied coldly. “Melissa, I want nothing to do with your mess. You need to come get him right now.”

She fell silent.

“You lose your man and come chasing after me for him? What do you take me for? Do you honestly think

anyone wants trash someone else threw away?”

Melissa grew frantic. “Nicole, don’t pretend you’re innocent…”

I cut her off. “Innocent? The two of you put on a six-year charade right in front of me, and now you dare to

question me?”

Silence stretched across the line.

“Keep your man under control. I never want to see him again.” I hung up.

My company had a scheduled outing that day. I got ready and headed out.

I’d barely stepped through the apartment gate when I ran into Pierce. He leaned against the wall. When he

spotted me, awe flashed across his face.

I rarely dressed up after moving to New York. I’d tried to save money for our future, to lighten Pierce’s burden. I never imagined that thrift would become another reason for him to grow tired of me.

Pierce strode toward me quickly. “Nicole!”

Before he could finish speaking, Melissa sprinted over out of nowhere. She clung to his arm, her eyes flooded with tears. “Pierce, come home with me! You can’t treat me like this!”

Pierce frowned and tried to shake her off. But Melissa clung on for dear life, her voice growing louder by the

second.

I stood still, watching the scene unfold without emotion.

“Nicole.” Someone called my name.

It was Rowan, the colleague who’d offered to drive me to the outing after hearing about my situation. He

gave Pierce a cool, assessing glance before stepping beside me.

“Nicole, who is he?” Pierce’s voice rang out behind me, urgent.

“Don’t walk away.” He called again, his tone softening. “Nicole, I need to talk to you.”

Pierce couldn’t chase me-Melissa refused to let go.

Melissa wasn’t ready to let me slip away either. She hurried forward and grabbed my wrist. “Don’t leave,

Nicole. We still have unfinished business between us.”

She said she just wanted to clear the air-but her voice carried, perfectly pitched for every ear within range.

My coworkers waiting in the distance and neighborhood residents all turned to watch.

Melissa’s eyes welled up, and tears spilled instantly. “Nicole, I thought we were best friends. How could you

seduce Pierce? We’re married now, we have a child together…”

She slowly sank toward the pavement, her voice trembling. “I know you can’t let him go, but you can’t bully

me like this.”

The crowd murmured, eyes like daggers.

“Isn’t that the girl who lives in this building? She looks so respectable.”

“You never know what’s hidden beneath the surface.”

I took a deep breath and said coldly. “Melissa, you know exactly what really happened.”

One of my coworkers, who knew my character, spoke up for me. “No way. Nicole wouldn’t do something like

that.”

Melissa froze for a split second, then cried harder. “It’s true. My son’s father won’t come home anymore. He

raced all the way to D.C. and abandoned me.”

More onlookers gathered, whispers growing louder.

“People have no morals these days.”

“How cruel of her.”

Melissa hunched over, clutching her stomach, her shoulders shook, tears falling precisely as more neighbors

paused to watch.

I pulled out my phone to call the police, but Pierce moved first.

He stepped forward and pulled Melissa up, his brows tightly knotted. “That’s enough!”

Melissa stared at him in disbelief. “Pierce, you’re still thinking about Nicole, aren’t you!”

Pierce ignored her, his gaze fixed firmly on me. His lips parted, as if trying to say something.

Then someone from the crowd spoke up-my coworker. She studied Pierce for a long moment. “Aren’t this Nicole’s ex-boyfriend? They’ve been together seven years, didn’t they break up just a month ago?”

Another coworker chimed in. “Right, that’s him. Nicole posted photos of him on Instagram before. Then what

about this woman… when was the baby born? It’s obvious. She’s the other woman.”

All eyes shifted back and forth between Pierce and Melissa.

Melissa’s face turned deathly pale. Her lips trembled, but she couldn’t utter a single word to defend herself.

Pierce stiffened, his face turning ashen.

My coworker patted my shoulder. “Let’s go. We’ll be late for the outing.”

I heard later that day that Melissa and Pierce had fought viciously. Pierce sent Melissa away quickly, but he

stayed behind in D.C.

That night, he texted me nonstop: [Was the man who picked you up for the outing your boyfriend?]

After I replied no, he told me to come downstairs.

I glanced out the window. The pavement below was lined with lights arranged into a giant heart. Pierce stood

in the middle of it, holding a huge bouquet of roses.

Another message popped up: [Nicole, this is my long-overdue proposal. I’m not leaving until you come

down.]

I never went. I ate dinner, showered, and went to bed as if nothing had happened.

Over the next three months, he unraveled. He quit his job, unable to concentrate, and started appearing along

my commute route…

He’d ask about my outfit, or whether I’d eaten breakfast. His desperate persistence grated on me.

One day, I stopped and demanded to know what he wanted.

He forced a smile. “I’m courting you, Nicole. I’ve filed for divorce. It’s over-legally and permanently. Let’s

start over. Give me one chance, please?”

I looked straight at him and shook my head without hesitation. “No.”

I pulled the man standing behind him forward. “Let me introduce you. This is my boyfriend.”

Panic washed over Pierce. The smile on his face dissolved, tears threatening to spill.

I ignored him, took my boyfriend’s hand, and walked away.

Pierce didn’t chase after me. Behind me, I heard nothing but broken, guttural sobs.

I never saw him again after that.
