Margaret grabbed my dress, tears streaming down her face. “Lily! This is all my fault! I’m the one who made Jason write that will!”

She sobbed like her heart was breaking. “Blame me if you want, but don’t be angry with him.”

Margaret kept the door open on purpose.

Her shouting echoed down the hallway, and soon footsteps came rushing over.

“What’s going on?”

“Is the bride crying in there?”

“No, it’s the mother-in-law crying…”

Patricia Miller, Jason’s aunt, poked her head in. When she saw Margaret kneeling on the floor, her eyes went wide.

“Oh my God! She’s not even officially married yet, and she’s already making her mother-in-law kneel?”

“That is completely out of line. It’s outrageous!”

More people gathered. Margaret knelt on the floor and cried even harder, her shoulders heaving as if she were the most wronged person in the room.

Jason helped Margaret to her feet and steadied her. Then he turned to me with a serious face.

“Lily, no matter what, you made my mother kneel. You’re responsible for this. Apologize to her first, then we’ll talk at home.”

Someone by the door chimed in, “Exactly! A daughter-in-law making her mother-in-law kneel? What kind of nonsense is that?”

“She seems like a decent girl. How can she be so unreasonable?”

I laughed in disbelief.

They worked together perfectly, mother and son, masters of emotional manipulation.

“Jason, which one of your ears heard me ask her to kneel?”

I glanced at Margaret, who was sniffling into Jason’s shoulder.

“Margaret, did I tell you to kneel?”

Margaret paused for a second, then started crying even louder. “Lily, I know you’re upset. I knelt on my own. I don’t blame you.”

It sounded generous, but every word was meant to smear me.

If she didn’t blame me, then who did?

The people at the door ate it up. “See? The mother-in-law is being this understanding, and the daughter-in-law still won’t let it go.”

Margaret had always loved to play the victim.

The first time she came to visit, she insisted on washing my feet in front of the whole family. Then she went and told the neighbors that I looked down on her because she was from the country and was trying to put her in her place.

I used to respect her as an elder. She raised Jason on her own, and I knew it wasn’t easy.

But I was done playing nice with this mother-son performance.

“Good,” I said, lifting my head and looking at the relatives in the doorway. “Since everyone’s here, let me finish what I was about to say on stage.”

I took a deep breath.

“That house in Jason’s will, the one he wants to leave to his mother? I paid for it. Every dollar. Over a million dollars. I only added his name because I loved him and wanted to be with him.”

The noise stopped instantly.

“He took the house I bought and put it in his will to give to his mother.”

I smiled. “So who’s really out of line here? Who’s outrageous?”

The moment the words left my mouth, the crowd’s tone shifted.

“Wait, the house is hers?”

“So the groom put her house in his will for his mother? That’s…”

One of the guests, quick with his mouth, joked, “Whoa, Jason. So you’re basically a kept man?”

Jason’s face went white as a sheet.

He yanked his phone from his jacket pocket, stabbed the screen a few times, and shoved it in my face.

“Lily, take a good look!”

The screen showed a screenshot of a transfer receipt.
