The moment the blade came at me, my mind went completely blank.

A figure crashed into me from the side, shoving me out of the way.

It wasn’t Adriel.

It was Silas.

He charged forward, throwing his arms around me. The knife sank into his back.

Leah’s mother went wild, yanking the blade out and stabbing him again and again.

By the time bailiffs tackled her, Silas’s shirt was soaked in blood.

He sank to his knees, blood streaming down the steps.

Screams erupted. Someone called for an ambulance. Cameras flashed.

Silas’s hand was clutching my dress with a death grip. Blood was seeping between his

fingers.

He tilted his head back and looked up at me. What I saw in his eyes wasn’t pain. It was a kind

of greedy, almost desperate anticipation.

He wanted me to cry, to crumble, to call his name.

He thought dying would fix everything.

I stared at him, blood all over his body, fingers clinging tight.

Then I took a step back.

His hand slipped, leaving a bright red streak on my dress.

Adriel stepped up from behind me. He took off his suit jacket, draped it over my shoulders,

and placed himself squarely between me and the scene in front of us.

He cast a cold, dismissive glance at Silas lying on the ground, then said to the bailiffs

standing nearby, “Get him out of here. He’s upsetting my client.”

No one paid attention to Silas anymore.

He had once stood at the highest place, judging others. Now he lay at the lowest point-

about to lose even the right to be judged.

I turned and walked toward the car parked at the side of the road. Adriel stayed close beside

me, one hand hovering lightly behind my waist, blocking out the swarm of cameras that

pressed in from every direction.

Ambulance sirens wailed behind us.

I didn’t look back.

Adriel opened the door. I climbed in and buckled up.

He walked around to the driver’s side, started the engine, and the car pulled slowly away from

the courthouse.

In the rearview mirror, I saw the paramedics lifting Silas onto a stretcher.

He turned his head, using what little strength he had left, and looked in the direction we were

driving.

The car windows were shut. The soundproofing was good.

But I knew what he’d heard.

After I got in the car, I’d said to Adriel. “Let’s go home.”

Not loud. Spoken softly. Carrying the quiet calm of someone who had just walked through

fire and come out the other side.

Adriel didn’t say anything. He just turned the air conditioning up a little higher.

Sunlight streamed over my bandaged hand.

The wound still healed, but it no longer hurt.

Some things, once broken, are just broken. You can’t mend them back together-not even

with a life.
