He Faked Poverty, Tricked Me Into an Abortion, All for a Bet Chapter 04

Ethan came home very late that night.

He opened the door and called my name as he changed his shoes.

“Erin!”

I sat on the couch and looked up at him.

He was carrying a small cake box and deliberately hiding it from view as he walked over.

“Look! One of my customers gave me this while I was making deliveries. It was her birthday, and she said I should have some cake. I looked it up, and this bakery is insanely expensive. Try it and tell

me if it’s good.”

He carefully opened the box in front of me and watched me expectantly.

Over the years, he had occasionally brought home expensive food, and every time, he claimed some generous customer had given it to him.

Whenever that happened, I used to jump up excitedly and throw myself into his arms, there were still plenty of good people in the world.

Ethan usually refused to eat any of it and always said he wanted to save the best for me.

I had been deeply touched.

telling him

Now I knew those things I could never bear to buy for myself were merely leftovers from Ethan’s expensive dinners.

Of course he did not want them.

They were not good enough for him.

A bitter smile tugged at my lips as I realized how utterly ridiculous I had been.

“Why aren’t you eating?” Ethan tapped my forehead affectionately. “Have a bite. Once I start making real money, I’ll buy you a whole cake.”

I stiffly scooped up a bite and put it in my mouth.

It was probably delicious, but I had never eaten anything like it before and could not tell how expensive the cream was or whether it had been made by some famous pastry chef.

I raised my hand and pulled a strand of chestnut hair from Ethan’s collar.

It was fine, long, and slightly curled.

Ethan leaned closer to examine it, then compared it with my hair.

“That’s weird. Where did this come from? I haven’t been close to any other women. Just you.”

After thinking for a moment, he added, “The customer who gave me the cake tonight happened to have long, curly chestnut hair. It must have gotten on me by accident.”

His tone was perfectly natural.

Then I remembered that this had happened before.

Sometimes, when he came home, there would be a faint trace of perfume or alcohol on him.

Every time, he would explain it away by saying, “The customer was wearing too much perfume,”

“A customer ordered food to a hotel.”

or,

I had accepted every excuse and never suspected a thing.

“Go ahead and eat. I’m going to take a shower.”

Ethan casually wound the strand of hair around his finger and tossed it into the trash.

I set down the spoon and silently watched him walk away, unable to stop thinking about the way he had laughed and talked so naturally with that beautiful woman earlier that evening.

Lena had told me she was Ethan’s fiancée and that the party had been her birthday celebration.

They would be officially engaged soon, and Lena had even shown me the digital invitation.

Standing together, they looked like the perfect wealthy couple in a social media post.

“Erin Carter, I suggest you cut Ethan off completely as soon as possible. His fiancée is not someone you want to cross. If she finds out you’re still involved with him, there’s no telling what she might

do.”

Lena had smiled coldly.

“And don’t fool yourself into thinking Ethan will protect you. You probably matter less to him than

his family dog.”

Her words had been cruel, but the truth was usually cruel.

I might have been slow to catch on, but I was not blind.
