He Faked His Death to Test My Mother Chapter 06

Nathan’s brow furrowed.

Vanessa stepped in front, annoyed. “People drown in that river every year. So what? None of our business.”

She signaled the man to leave.

But he stood frozen.

Lips white, like words were stuck in his throat.

Nathan noticed. “Go on.”

The man swallowed hard, voice trembling. “The body has a necklace. Looks like… like the one Mrs. Ellis always wore.”

The air stopped.

Nathan’s pupils contracted. He remembered my screaming, my breakdown, me saying over and over that Mom was dead in that river.

Next second, he shoved Vanessa aside and ran downstairs like a madman.

Vanessa fell hard, caught off guard.

Cameras clicked wildly at her.

Her face twisted. “Stop filming! Turn it off!”

No one listened.

Nathan crashed through who knows how many people to reach the river.

But his steps slowed at the last few feet.

The closer he got, the tighter something squeezed his heart. His breathing went shallow.

He prayed the assistant was wrong. Just a similar style.

But when he saw the locket on that skeleton’s neck—he dropped to his knees with a thud.

His knees slammed the ground. He didn’t feel it.

The staff member rushed over. “Sir, maybe it’s the same design. Don’t panic yet.”

Nathan didn’t hear him. He reached out, shaking.

Slowly, he turned the locket over.

On the back, two letters.

The initials of their last name.

A cheap trinket he’d bought for pocket change. She wore it for ten years, never took it off.

The staff member stammered excuses. “Maybe someone found it. Or stole it.”

Nathan’s voice was shredded, barely human. “Who’d want some

cheap piece of junk like that, except her?

He seemed drained of all strength, but he couldn’t stop. His fingers trembled downward.

They touched the skeleton’s shin.

There—a clear old scar.

Nathan froze. His fingertips stopped, afraid to move.

“It’s her. It’s Clara.”

That year, he was on top of the business world, arrogant as hell.

An enemy he pushed too far hired a killer.

A black gun barrel. He was pinned to the ground.

Mom stepped in front of him without hesitation.

The gunshot cracked. The bullet tore through her shin.

Her face went white with pain. But she turned to comfort him. “Don’t be scared. I’m okay…”

After that day, he swore to protect her. Never let her get hurt again.

And now—a skeleton lay in front of him.

“No!” A raw howl ripped from his throat.

He clutched Mom’s remains. Completely shattered.

Then a worker stumbled over.

“Sir! Sir!”

Nathan looked up, face soaked with tears. “Get away! I don’t care about anything! Not even if the company goes under!”

The staff member stammered but didn’t leave.

“It’s—it’s your daughter.”

Nathan stopped breathing.

“You said not to save her because she could swim. So we didn’t. Now she’s washed up on the shore. She’s unconscious. No pulse…”
