He Faked Cancer While I Lost Thirty Babies For Him Chapter 02

“I want to return to the real world alone in forty-eight hours, without Sebastian!”

“Are you sure, Host? Returning alone without Sebastian will jeopardize the Langford family’s century-old legacy. The consequences will be severe.”

The stale reek of smoke and alcohol hit me in the face. Clinging to the last of my strength and the final thread of consciousness I had left, I screamed.

“I’m sure!”

“Mr. Langford, Mrs. Langford has passed out. As you instructed, Mr. Walsh’s drink was drugged as well, and he passed out before he could do anything to her.”

“Good. Whichever finger touched Mrs. Langford, cut it off.”

When I woke again, I was lying in a hospital bed.

Aside from a few bruises, there were no other injuries on my body.

“You’re awake?”

Sebastian’s voice sounded a little softer. He brought over a bowl of oatmeal and held it to my lips.

“Eat something. The doctor said you’re too weak and need to build your strength back up.”

My heart clenched hard, and I turned my face away. “Why bother pretending to care?”

Wasn’t he the one who had forced me to haul caskets, test drugs, lose pregnancies, and work my body into collapse?

I turned my head even farther away.

Mrs. Walker, the housekeeper, suddenly walked in carrying an insulated food container. “…Mrs. Langford, your health matters.”

“Mr. Langford hasn’t lied to you about everything.”

“Some time ago, the company really did have cash-flow problems.”

“Mr. Langford doesn’t have stomach cancer, but his health did suffer badly from working himself to the bone on those projects.”

“And think about it. The night with the jeweler, who was the one who saved you?”

I froze and instinctively looked at Sebastian.

My gaze landed on the bruises around his wrist, and my heart suddenly tightened.

When I passed out last night, I had vaguely heard someone say something.

That sixty-year-old jeweler had not been arranged by Sebastian to humiliate me.

“That night, Mr. Langford broke two ribs saving you.”

Sealed-away memories surged back all at once.

The night I first woke up in this world, my eyes were empty, and I was cornered by a group of thugs in an alley.

My parents in the real world had died one after another in car accidents, and I had no desire to live anymore.

It was Sebastian who had shown up in clothes washed so many times they had turned pale, fighting off those thugs like he did not care whether he lived or died.

“Go home. Don’t walk alone at night.”

But what home did I have left?

I pushed him away and stumbled toward the river.

Just as I reached the bank, someone seized my wrist in a death grip.

“What are you doing?”

“There’s no point in living.”

“If there’s no point, then come with me.”

Only later did I learn that night was the anniversary of both his family’s bankruptcy and his parents’ murder by their enemies.

In the days that followed, he took me with him and started building a business.

Little by little, he got through to me, and everything he did gave me a reason to keep living.

We lived in a damp basement.

In winter, mold grew in the corners and rain leaked through the walls, so he wrapped the only thin comforter we had entirely around me.

When I was depressed and could not sleep through the night, he would sit quietly beside me without saying a word.

Later, I became stronger. I was no longer afraid of any dirty or exhausting work.

I helped hold our little home together.

“Host has encountered the romance target. Mission assigned. Win over Sebastian, and your mother in the real world can be revived.”

One day, the System’s voice suddenly appeared in my mind.

I lay on the wooden bed, joy rising in my chest.

Once I helped Sebastian get revenge and saved my mother, we would return to the real world together.

After that, our hard work finally began to pay off.

After three years of struggle, our first project launched.

That night, I drank with him to celebrate. He suddenly leaned down, and my reflection filled his eyes.

He lowered himself over me, and we gave ourselves to each other.

A trace of hope I should never have had suddenly sparked in my heart.

I took the oatmeal from him and gently sipped it.

It was sweet.

But in the next second, my brows sharply drew together.

After Sebastian confessed for the thirtieth time that he had lied to me for Chloe, I had swapped the Romance Mission for a Suffering Mission.
