He Dropped Me at the Service Station to Take Her Home Chapter 02

When I stepped out of the shower, someone was already waiting inside my bedroom.

Cas leaned against my writing desk, a takeout container set beside his elbow.

I froze mid-step, about to speak, when a cotton bath towel dropped over my dripping wet hair.

Cas’s hands settled on top of the towel, rubbing gentle circles. His voice was muffled through the fabric.

“You never blow dry your hair. How many times do I have to warn you? Sleeping with wet hair gives you migraines.”

“Remember last month? You were stuck with a splitting headache for two whole days.”

“I grabbed your favorite—loaded cheese omelet with extra sauce. Eat it once you dry your hair.”

I stood completely still, unable to utter a single word.

All the numb, tight agony I’d held onto since the highway rest stop crashed over me all at once.

My eyes burned hot, and the tears I’d suppressed for hours spilled down my cheeks nonstop.

His hands paused in my hair. Cas hesitated, about to lift the towel away from my face.

“Ellie?”

I clutched the towel tighter in my fists, my shoulders shaking uncontrollably.

He didn’t move his hands for a long while. Finally, they fell loose and pulled me into a faint, tentative hug.

“Ellie, Izzy’s your sister, and you’ve always been the one to look after her. I figured you’d cut her some slack.”

He paused and patted my back awkwardly once.

“Izzy was downstairs crying so hard she threw up again. Her body’s still fragile, and she’ll feel terrible tomorrow if she keeps this up.”

“Go talk to her later, okay? Smooth things over between you two.”

My grip on the towel loosened slowly.

My tears just stopped, all at once. I let out a rough, hoarse laugh.

“Okay.”

He breathed out in obvious relief and pressed the warm takeout box into my palms.

“Good, eat it while it’s still hot. I’m heading home now.”

I watched his back disappear down the hallway, then tossed the entire container straight into my trash can.

How could he forget? The person obsessed with loaded cheese omelets smothered in extra sauce was Izzy.

Not me.
