He Didn’t See Our Son Suffocate, He Saw Her Concert Tickets Chapter 01

Ethan Shaw stared at his phone again and popped a grape straight into his six-month-old son’s mouth.

The next second, the boy was choking, his face turning crimson, arms and legs flailing.

Ethan didn’t even glance up from his screen. His apology came out light and throwaway. “Sorry, wasn’t paying attention.”

Ever since his “first love” had added him back as a friend, that line had become his go-to.

I frantically patted my son’s back, tears streaming down my face, until he finally coughed up the grape.

Ethan glanced at the resentment written all over my face, then went right back to his screen.

“Vivian’s been waiting months for these concert tickets. If we don’t snag them now, they’re gone.”

It wasn’t an explanation. He just didn’t want me making a scene and messing up his timing.

I held my son, who was still heaving with sobs, my back soaked in cold sweat.

In that moment, I knew — I was done pretending this was the happy family everyone thought we were.

My son curled against me, still clearly uncomfortable.

I kept my voice low. “Why don’t you drive us to the hospital? Just to get him checked out. Peace of mind.”

“Got ’em!”

I’d barely finished the sentence when Ethan practically launched himself off the couch.

He shot a voice message over to Vivian, crowing about the tickets. The two of them fell into animated chatter.

I stood there, a wave of sheer absurdity pressing in on my chest until I could barely breathe.

He happened to glance up, caught my expression, and only then did he belatedly wipe the grin off his face.

“The kid’s not crying anymore, is he? Just pull up an AI app if you’re worried. It’ll tell you everything you need to know.”

Ever since our son was born, I’d struggled with postpartum anxiety. Whenever I asked one cautious question too many, he’d just toss his phone at me. “Ask AI if you don’t know something. It’s right there. One search and you’ve got your answer.”

What temperature should the formula be? What do you do if the baby has jaundice? How many night feedings are best?

I typed every single question into that AI software, word by word.

Sometimes the answers were wrong, and I’d end up at the hospital alone with the baby.

Meanwhile, Ethan was busy unclogging Vivian’s drain, making her soup when she was hungover, celebrating her birthday. He never said no to her. Not once.

I used to make these sarcastic cracks — “Didn’t you say AI could fix everything? Can’t she just look it up?”

He’d turn it right back on me. “That’s completely different. Is AI going to keep her safe? Honestly, I don’t know what goes through your head sometimes.”

Thinking back on all of it, watching my son tremble with discomfort, I couldn’t stop myself from asking.

“The three of us — me, our son, Vivian. Who comes first in your heart?”

Ethan finally looked up, like he couldn’t quite believe I’d ask something like that.

Then his brows snapped together.

“It’s one concert ticket. Are you seriously turning this into some childish ranking game?”

“You’re a mother now. Try acting like a grown-up.”

Every time Vivian’s name came up, I was always the “immature” one in the end. If she’d asked him that question, he’d have posted about it on social media, calling her “pure and free-spirited.”

I was done wasting words. I grabbed my keys, ready to take our son to the hospital.

I didn’t expect him to snatch them right out of my hand.

“The concert’s in the next city. We need to leave now. Easier if I drive her.”

“Just ask AI where you can get a ride. It’s not far. Same difference.”

He grabbed a jacket and stormed out.

The baby coughed up a mouthful of blood. Ethan didn’t even see it.

Watching those cold, detached answers crawl across my phone screen, line after line — something inside me finally snapped.
