He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 17

After that incident, Jesse and Chloe seemed to get caught up in a mutual silent falling-out.

Chloe often showed up to school with puffy, red eyes. When people asked if they’d broken up, she only gave vague, evasive answers.

Once word spread that Jesse was single again, a number of girls who’d been pursuing Ezra backed off—not just because they’d shifted their attention to Jesse, but also because Ezra kept everyone at arm’s length.

During lunch, a popular girl from the class across the hall came over to see Ezra.

“I heard sci-fi films are your thing,” she said. “There’s a brand-new sci-fi movie premiering this Saturday, and I have premiere passes. Wanna come with me?”

Ezra didn’t look up from his notebook, still scribbling something down. “Thanks, but I’m not interested.”

She fixed her eyes on him. “So what do you actually go for then? What’s your usual type?”

Ezra answered plainly. “Pretty girls.”

“Am I not pretty?”

He drew out a slow “Oh,” then added casually, “The prettiest one.”

“Don’t act like you’re too good for everyone around you,” she huffed. “Word around school is you’re pretty average across the board—family background, grades, everything. You’ve got no reason to be this cocky.”

Ezra kept his same listless demeanor. “You’re right.”

The girl picked up on something off. “Wait, you’ve already got a crush on somebody, haven’t you?”

Luke walked back into the room and jumped into the conversation. “Yeah, he does. I don’t know who she is, but he’s definitely crushing on someone. He said the timing’s not right yet, so he hasn’t made a move. You’re wasting your time, honestly.”

Curious about the gossip, I perked up and listened in.

After hearing the whole thing, I grew more and more convinced I knew who Ezra’s crush was…

The prettiest girl. Waiting for the right timing.

Chloe had won the school popularity poll last year. And “right timing” probably meant Jesse and Chloe hadn’t officially broken up yet.

I glanced at Ezra, hesitating.

“What?” he asked.

I knew it was petty, but I couldn’t help myself. “Your taste is pretty terrible.”

Ezra raised an eyebrow. “What?”
