Ezra picked out a hot dog cart on the street corner.

A hot dog only cost six bucks.

I’d prepared myself for him to pick a fancy spot with a $100+ per-person price tag.

I squeezed my wallet nervously and asked him, “You’re fine with just eating here?”

Ezra shot me a sideways glance. “Don’t tell me you’re bailing on treating me now?”

“No, not at all!”

I gave my wallet a quick, reassuring pat, then tucked it back into my warm pocket.

Once we’d placed our order, he pulled out his phone and called Jesse.

“I’ve got something to handle, so I’m bailing. Have fun without me.”

Jesse was quiet for a couple of beats before replying in a casual, unhurried tone. “What’s more important than catching up with old buddies? It’s been ages since we’ve all hung out together.”

It was well past the dinner rush by then, so the stall was quiet with only a few customers around. The teasing voice on the other end of the phone drifted clearly into my ears whether I wanted to hear it or not.

” C’mon, quit pestering him, Jesse. It’s pretty clear he’s hanging out with a girl right now.”

“You might not know this, but shortly after he moved here last month, he went out one day and came back saying he’d figured out exactly what his type was.”

“I was totally caught off guard back then. I never figured he’d catch real feelings for someone.”

Jesse’s voice came out flat and unreadable. “Spill then. What’s this person he’s got a thing for even supposed to be like?”

Ezra grew impatient with their idle chatter. “Forward me the receipt later, I’ve got everyone’s tab.”

The hot dogs arrived just then, steam rising off the grilled buns.

I scooped one up, held it to my mouth, and blew on it to cool it down.

His friend thought way too highly of his motives. He’d flaked on their get-together just to watch me apologize and wallow in guilt just so he could tease and sneer at me.
