He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 11

He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 11

Ezra never came back to school for the entire afternoon.

During break, I rested my head on my desk, staring blankly at his empty seat.

The annoyed, aggravated look on his face before he left kept playing over in my mind.

I suddenly wondered if I’d wrongly accused him after all…
Orchestrating a chance encounter outside of school was practically impossible.

I slouched dejectedly, and let out a heavy sigh. I really had been an ungrateful jerk.

When dismissal rolled around, I spotted Ezra standing by the school entrance from a distance.

I squeezed my palms nervously, debating whether I should walk over and apologize.

But Chloe cut ahead of me and hurried straight up to him first.

“Let’s go ahead to the diner first,” she said. “Jesse got pulled aside by our homeroom teacher to talk about the academic competition. He’ll catch up with us later.”

Ezra slowly pulled his gaze away from me and left alongside Chloe.

They walked ahead of me. Chloe chattered away at him, while Ezra only responded with short, occasional grunts.

Listening in on their chat, I quickly put two and two together: Ezra wasn’t actually close with Chloe at all. He was only Jesse’s friend.

I’d misjudged everything…

Crushed by guilt, I sank my head further down.

Before I could take another step, four guys blocked my path. I looked up and recognized them as a group of former students who hung around loitering near campus.

The ringleader, Jax, wore a smug grin.

“Hey, can I get your number?”

One of his buddies sized me up from head to toe.

“Jax has great taste, huh? He’s tired of all those flashy girls. This soft, understated pretty type’s pretty interesting too.”

Up ahead, Ezra halted and turned to watch.

Chloe dismissed the whole thing nonchalantly.

“It’s nothing, don’t bother getting involved.”

“I know how Sadie works. She usually says yes if someone pursues her for two months straight.”

“I’m not calling her loose or anything, I just think she’s really desperate for validation. She’s probably loving the attention right now and won’t actually say no. C’mon, let’s keep walking.”

Ezra didn’t confirm or deny her words. Instead, he looked straight at me and asked, “Do you wanna go out with him?”

I knew Ezra was ready to step in. Under the guys’ intense stares, I shook my head.

Ezra’s expression didn’t change.

“Then come here. You just gonna plant yourself there forever?”

I took one tentative step forward, but Jax clamped a hand down on my shoulder.

“Oh, so you two are having a little chat now? Think I’m invisible or something?”

Ezra’s eyes drifted to the hand on my shoulder, then locked onto Jax’s face.

“Got a problem keeping your hands off people?”

“Back off! Stay out of my business!” Jax snapped.

The second the words left his mouth, Ezra kicked the back of his knee, sending him crashing to the ground.

Ezra pressed his weight down on Jax’s shoulder, tightening his grip.

“You’re so fond of grabbing people’s shoulders. Figured I’d return the favor.”

I couldn’t see exactly which spot Ezra was pressing, but Jax contorted his face in pain, yelling out and begging for Ezra to let up.

“Shit, I’m sorry, dude, I messed up!”

“I swear I’m sorry, let go, I think my arm’s breaking!”

Ezra released his grip slowly.

I watched the four guys scramble away in panic, feeling a little impressed despite myself.

He was seriously good at fighting. Thank god he hadn’t lashed out at me that afternoon…
