On the screen, Grant lay in a hospital bed, eyes closed, an IV in the back of his hand.

In the next room, Delaney, with bandages wrapped around her wrist, was having her blood pressure taken by

a nurse.

“Your fiancé and your sister are both in the hospital right now. Are you aware of this?”

“No.”

“Whatever happens to them is none of my business.”

A ripple went through the reporters.

“Everyone, we have a live connection to Ms. Whitlock’s mother.”

A second later, Mom’s face filled the tablet.

“Maren! Your sister is lying in a hospital bed, and you can’t even show your face!”

“How did I raise such a cold–blooded daughter?”

“You ruined the wedding. You made Delaney kneel and beg forgiveness and forced her out of the house.”

“Now she’s barely alive, and you’re hiding out of state, living the good life!”

“Get back here right now! Otherwise I’ll pretend I never had you as a daughter!”

The microphones pressed in around my mouth.

“Ms. Whitlock, your mother demands you return to Ellsworth Falls immediately. How do you respond?”

I opened my mouth.

“..”

“She doesn’t have to respond.”

A hoarse voice pushed through from outside the crowd.

Everyone turned.

Grant forced his way through.

He wore a hospital gown under a suit jacket, and medical tape still marked the back of his hand

He crossed to me in one step and placed himself in front of me, shielding me completely.

I’m the one who called off the wedding.”

He turned toward my mother on the screen.

“Ask me first.”

The whole place fell silent.

On the video call, Mom screamed.

“Grant Ashcroft! Have you lost your mind? What about Delaney?”

Grant’s voice was ice.

“I don’t care about that lunatic.”

He reached out to me, hope written across his face.

“Maren, come home with me. Please?”

I looked at the man standing in front of me.

I’d once dreamed of those words.

But now I walked around him, into the lane the crowd had made.

“Grant.”

“My home isn’t here.”

I got two blocks away before hurried footsteps came from behind me.

“Maren!”

Grant had caught up. His face was terrifyingly pale.

He stepped around to face me.

“Say something. Curse at me if you want…”

Behind the crowd, a scream went off.

“Grant!”

Delaney ran toward us, barefoot

A paring knife in her hand.

She’d watched the livestream and run out of the hospital.

“Why are you protecting her!”

‘All these years, I faked a germ phobia just to make you look at me once! I nearly gave my life for you!”

She shrieked and lunged at me.

The blade aimed straight at my face.

Grant caught the blade in his bare hand.

Blood ran between his fingers, and he didn’t even frown.

“Nobody touches her today!”

“I will touch her! I want her gone from this world for good!”

She bent and sank her teeth into Grant’s wrist, and then charged straight at me.

The reporters who had followed us all raised their cameras.

The livestream was still running.

On the big screen, Mom’s face went from red to white.

“Delaney! What’s in your hand! Put it down! Put it down right now…”

It was too late.

Everything went black.

Then I saw Grant stumbling toward me, shouting until his voice tore.

When I opened my eyes again, Mom was there.

Half her hair had gone white.

When she saw me awake, she pulled me into her arms.

“You’re awake? Does it hurt? I’ll get the doctor…”

I only shook my head.

Seeing my cold face, Mom suddenly dropped to her knees.

“Maren, I knows I was wrong. I knows everything now.”
