He Chose My Sister on Our Wedding Day—So I Walked Away Chapter 05

On the interstate to the airport, Grant floored the gas.

That announcement kept echoing in his head, along with her last words:

“None of your business.”

His phone rang. His assistant.

“I found Ms. Whitlock’s flight. It departs at ten fifteen…”

“What time is it now?”

“Nine fifty.”

He swerved across lanes, and the speedometer needle climbed.

Delaney’s call cut in.

“Grant, where are you?”

“The doctor said my hand can’t be redressed until tomorrow. You promised to stay with me.”

He clenched the steering wheel.

“Maren’s flying to Port Halden. I’m going to the airport to bring her back. I’ll ask a nurse to change your

dressing…”

“Don’t go!”

Delaney’s voice shot up.

Then it dropped again, thick with tears.

“She’s doing this on purpose. She just wants to see you panic.”

“She’s a grown woman. What could happen to her? She’ll be back tomorrow on her own.”

“I’m all alone in this hospital, and I’m scared. Come back and stay with me, please?”

Grant’s fingers tightened on the wheel.

Ever since he’d met Delaney, every fear and every tear of hers had been answered by his outstretched hand.

He had gotten used to it.

But this time, what flashed through his head was the white glare of that grocery–store light.

Maren, on the floor.

Blood running down her leg.

For a moment he felt dizzy.

So much blood.

Could it really have been just her period?

On the phone, Delaney broke into sobs.

“You promised you’d protect me for the rest of your life!”

She said a lot more after that, but Grant heard none of it.

He hung up.

When he reached the airport, it was ten twenty.

On the departure board, the status of that flight read:

Departed.

He stood at the glass wall and watched the plane vanish into the clouds.

His phone rang. A real estate agent.

“Mr. Ashcroft, we have a client who’d like to see the condo you and Ms. Whitlock…”

“What condo?”

“It’s been listed two days. We already have four groups scheduled.”

Grant froze.

“No. I’m not selling.”

Hurried footsteps came from behind him.

Delaney stood barefoot in the crowded terminal, her bandaged right hand still dripping blood.

“Grant.”

Grant looked at her and suddenly asked:

“That day at the grocery store, why did you push her?”

Delaney stiffened for two seconds, and then the tears fell first.

“You suspect me?”

Grant frowned.

“I’m not suspecting you. I just want to know what actually happened that day.”

“She’s the one who yanked away from me and slammed herself into the shelf! The store has cameras Check

them any time you like!”

Grant stared at her and said nothing.

Tears streamed down Delaney’s face.

“There’s something I’ve been hiding from you.”

“One of Maren’s coworkers, some trust–fund guy, has been chasing her. I bet the two of them went together

this time.”

Something in Grant’s eyes changed.

He remembered the $15,000 she’d sent back.

He remembered how easily she’d called off the wedding.

“So that’s it.”

“Find someone for me.”

He dialed a number, his eyes still on the word Departed on the board.

“I want to know what’s between Maren Whitlock and that coworker.”

He didn’t see it.

Delaney lowered her head, hiding the flash of triumph in her eyes.
