The lawyer’s gaze remained placidly professional.

“Sir,” he repeated, “fiancée is not a legal identity.”

He continued, “Ms. Ellis’s lawyer also stated that his client is not operating from emotion but has a very clear objective. She wants only what the law provides and will not accept any private mediation or ‘emotional compensation.’”

Ben felt his blood run cold.

“Furthermore,” the lawyer said, flipping a page in his notes, “your former fiancée is very well-prepared. Bank records, and… other evidence, are all accounted for. She is far more composed than you seem to believe.”

It hadn’t been an impulsive flight after an emotional breakdown.

It had been a calculated exit.

Ben walked out of the law firm in a daze. The cold wind on his face did nothing to clear his head. The words “other evidence” echoed in his mind.

What other evidence?

He stopped short on the sidewalk as an image he had deliberately suppressed flooded his memory.

The bridal boutique.

When he’d rushed in, he’d seen only Sloane holding a crying Ruby. Without a moment’s hesitation, he had shoved Mara aside and screamed at her for being unable to tolerate a child.

Only now did he remember what he hadn’t seen: her bleeding hand, the ruined veil.

And he hadn’t seen the security camera in the corner, its small red light blinking.

When Mara had faced his tirade, as he treated her like a hysterical monster, she had simply lifted her eyes and glanced at that camera.

Before leaving, she had calmly asked for a copy of the footage.

Now he understood.

The “other evidence” was the video of him, humiliating and assaulting her in public.

He had always thought of her as fragile, hurt, someone who needed him to chase her down and save her.

Only now did Ben finally understand. While he was arrogantly trying to figure out how to compensate her, Mara had already taken every legal step to save herself.

She hadn’t been running away.

She had been collecting evidence.
