He Chose Her, So I Jumped Chapter 05

He Chose Her, So I Jumped Chapter 05

I hovered overhead, and the sight of Cassian drowning in grief almost made me laugh.

They had all said my depression was fake. Now that I was truly dead, why were he acting like this?

Absurd. It was absurd.

Cassian looked as though his soul had been ripped out. He dropped to the ground and stared blankly

at my body.

He couldn’t understand what had happened. My condition had been improving, so why had I ended my life?

Hospital security soon cleared the area while the cleaning staff washed away the blood.

I watched from above as they placed my body into a bag.

The hospital tower was tall. The fall had shattered my body into pieces.

No matter how long they worked, they couldn’t make me whole again.

“Have you reached her next of kin?”

At the question, a flicker passed through Cassian’s lifeless eyes. He answered hoarsely.

“I’m her family.”

The doctor rejected that without hesitation.

“The victim’s parents died at this hospital, and our records show she was unmarried. How exactly are you family?”

Cassian had no answer. The doctor was right. We weren’t married, and strictly speaking, our only

legal relationship was doctor and patient.

What family did that make him?

In the end, he produced proof that we had lived together and established that he was my boyfriend. Only then did the hospital release my body to him.

I thought he would take me to a crematorium. Instead, he drove straight to the back side of the

mountain.

My parents’ crude graves were there, beside the landfill at its base.

The stench must have been unbearable. Even though I couldn’t smell it, I could imagine how

Wolently it burned the nose.

Cassian seemed oblivious. He crouched in the dirt and dug up my parents’ coffins with his bare

hands.

Burying them there had been Marceline’s idea in the first place.

Looking back, he could finally see that she had done it to hurt Elowen.

But too late. Every realization came too late.

He kept digging numbly, inch by inch, until a shocked cry sounded behind him.

Marceline stared at him as if he had lost his mind.

“What are you doing? Why would you dig up their coffins?”

Cassian’s face remained blank, his voice calm.

“They shouldn’t be buried here.”

That quiet answer instantly darkened Marceline’s eyes.

She drew a deep breath and opened her mouth to argue.

But before she could, a crowd appeared from nowhere and surrounded the three of them with

pointing fingers.

“Aren’t these the people who drove that woman to jump? Trash always finds trash. No wonder they

ended up together.”

“She framed the poor woman for pushing her down the stairs at the hospital. Now the security footage is everywhere. Let’s hear her explain that.”

“I heard she seduced her best friend’s boyfriend. The Hartwells raised her from childhood, and she repaid them by becoming a vicious, ungrateful snake.”

The accusations struck from every direction, draining the color from Marceline’s face.

Before, Cassian would have stepped in to defend her immediately.

Now? He acted as though he heard nothing. He kept his head lowered, lost in thoughts no one could

read.

Her lips trembled as she reached for him and pleaded.

“Cassian, explain it to them. Are you really going to stand there while they smear me?”

Cassian’s lashes quivered. At last, he looked up.

“What smear? Which part did they get wrong?”

“Did the Hartwells not raise you? Was Julian not her boyfriend? Or did you not frame her and drive her to jump to her death?”

His composure shattered with every word. By the time he stared at Marceline again, his emotions

were spiraling.

“You knew she had depression. Why did you incite online harassment and use it to crush her? Marceline Voss, her family gave you everything! Is this how you repaid them?!”

His voice broke on the final words.

He remembered my shattered body outside the hospital and the doctors and nurses saying the

victim had shown no will to survive.

The memory left him fighting for air.

He couldn’t bear to imagine what had gone through my mind when I jumped.

He truly couldn’t.

My parents had been driven to their deaths, and the public backlash had pushed me step by step to the same edge.

And he, the person closest to me, hadn’t helped me through it. He had made everything worse.

Every one of those wounds had helped send me through that window without hesitation.
