At last, Luca’s phone stopped ringing.

Then, up on the dais, his mother’s phone rang.

The moment she answered, her face went white.

“Luca!” she shouted across the silent room. “The Coast Guard

found Elena’s boat. There was no one on board.”

Luca’s head snapped up.

Raw fear flooded his eyes.

He spun around, snatched the car keys from his assistant, and bolted from the hotel, driving like a madman toward the

marina.

He kept accelerating.

By the time he arrived, the empty sailboat had been towed back to the dock. Coast Guard personnel were swarming it, and several Moretti family speedboats were just returning from their first sweep of the sound.

Luca’s legs gave out as he got out of the car.

He slipped on the wet pavement but scrambled right back

“Elena!”

He charged toward the boat, only to be blocked by family

enforcers securing the scene.

“Let me go! She’s still in the water!”

A Moretti family advisor walked over.

In his hand was a clear evidence bag. Inside were Elena’s phone, her necklace, and the black diamond ring.

“This is all that was on the boat,” the advisor said, his voice grim. “The autopilot was set for deep water. The Coast Guard is searching. So are our people.”

Luca stopped struggling and just stared at the ring.

He had put it on her finger himself.

It was the token by which he had declared to all of Seattle that she was his to protect.

Now, she had taken it off and left it behind.

Luca collapsed to his knees on the wet dock.

Everyone present knew that the heir to the Moretti family bowed his head to no one. But he reached out with a

trembling hand, touched the ring through the plastic, and a

tear fell.

Then another.

Finally, he covered his face, and a broken, shattering sound

tore from his throat.
