He Chose Her, So I Chose to Disappear Forever Chapter 06

The sound of a suitcase rolling across the floor pulled me back to the present.

Luca came downstairs, luggage in hand. He paused when he saw me still sitting on the couch, then walked over anyway.

He crouched down, his hands on my shoulders.

“Elena, don’t worry. I’ll be back before the wedding.”

The moment he said the words, he seemed to reassure himself.

He leaned in, kissed my forehead, then stood and turned to go.

I didn’t move.

Just as he reached the door, I called his name.

“Luca.”

His hand stilled on the doorknob. He turned slightly toward me.

“What is it?”

Warm light from the entryway spilled over his black coat. Outside, two guards had already opened the car door for him. This man controlled docks, guns, and the fates of more people than I could count, yet he had always been so sure that I would stay right where he left me.

We looked at each other across the room.

After a long moment, I smiled.

“Goodbye, Luca.”

I knew, with chilling certainty, that this was the last time we would ever see each other.

He had promised to be back for the wedding.

But if Bianca had gotten him on that plane, she would find a way to make him miss the ceremony. And Luca would always find some family rule to excuse her, and to excuse himself.

He didn’t understand my farewell.

Seeing me smile, he was visibly relieved.

He raised a hand in that familiar gesture, the one he always used when leaving for an assignment. “Wait for me,” he said.
