He Chased Me to Spite His Enemy. So I Left Him at the Altar Chapter 08

I leaned against my car, trying to breathe, but I couldn’t shake the weight pressing down on my heart. 

The dull ache in my chest had turned into a knife twisting deeper and deeper. My hands were shaking. 

I pressed my hand over my heart and squeezed my eyes shut. 

*Don’t cry.* 

No, Evelyn Blackwood. Not now. 

I could feel it–Dorian Thorne was starting to feel guilty. It’s 

almost over. 

Lately, I’d taken him to all our old spots–the places where we 

had our “firsts.” I gave him a mission: I asked him to turn 

them into a photo album. A record of everything we’d been 

through. 

I told him: “This will be our happy memories for the future.” 

Every time he wrote down a date or a place, he would pause for a long time. 

I know what he was doing. He was *missing* it. 

Getting back at me was real–but so were the feelings. 

I was going to take that guilt and turn it into a knife. 

Does it hurt? 

It hurt me more. 

Because in those memories, my love was pure. Not a single lie 

in it. 

But I’m not losing, either. I loved him with my whole heart, and I can let him go just the same. 

I just picked the wrong guy. 

When I looked up, there was a bottle of water in front of me. 

I looked up–Cassian Greymoor stood there in the sun. 

“I saw everything.” 

He said. 

“And you’re *still* going to marry him?” 

I didn’t take the water. 

He asked: “Do you regret it?” 

I loved who I loved. That’s not regret. 

“Do you want… to think about giving me a chance?” He looked at me carefully, almost nervous. 

I almost laughed from the absurdity. 

Is this just how men are? When you throw your heart at their feet, they don’t give a damn. But the second you take it back- take away all that obvious, open, shameless adoration–they all come running to tell you they love you. 

“Cassian Greymoor–I’ve told you a million times. I don’t feel anything for you anymore. Even if things with Dorian Thorne don’t work out, I wouldn’t choose you.” 

“Why not? In our world, we match in every way that matters. And we’ve known each other for years. We know each other’s baggage.” 

I laughed coldly. “So I’m supposed to pick between you and Dorian Thorne? I can’t live without one of you breathing down my neck?” 

“No, that’s not-” He reached for me, and I pulled away. 

Then I heard a familiar voice behind me. “What the hell is going on here?” 

I turned around. Dorian Thorne stood silhouetted against the sun, his face hidden in shadow, but his eyes were dark and 

cold. 

The air around him felt thick–oppressive. The instinctive, primal energy of an alpha werewolf triggered by a threat to his territory. He swung and punched Cassian Greymoor right in 

the face. 

Cassian Greymoor only needed a second to recover before he hit back. Werewolves don’t need to warm up for a fight–their 

bodies are always ready. 

“Cassian Greymoor–if you try anything with Evelyn Blackwood, I swear to God I’ll fucking kill you!” Dorian Thorne’s eyes were bloodshot, his voice shaking with rage. 

Cassian Greymoor didn’t back down. He went right for the jugular. “Dorian Thorne–and you’re so much better? Don’t pretend you didn’t go after Evelyn Blackwood just to get under 

my skin.” 

“Don’t pretend your feelings for her are so pure.” 

“Yeah, I want Evelyn Blackwood—but she never wanted me 

back. Meanwhile, you’ve got yourself a little side piece, don’t you?” 

For a second, Dorian Thorne went completely still. 

Then his face went pale with panic as he looked at me. 

He said: “Evelyn, let me explain.” 

He said she was just a girl with a crush on him, nothing more. He saw himself in her. 

There was nothing between them. 

Dorian Thorne grabbed my hands, holding tight. “I’ve loved you for years. We’re about to get married. You have to trust 

me.” 

His grip was so tight. But it was strange–the pain in my chest had started to fade. 

I looked at him calmly. “Dorian Thorne. What if we just… didn’t get married?” 

“What?” 

His panic looked real. 

“We’re three days away–baby, don’t say stuff like that, 

okay?” 

“Dorian Thorne… aren’t you kind of bitter about all this?” I 

smiled a little. “You think I chose you because I couldn’t have 

Cassian Greymoor. You don’t believe that I’m not still in love 

with him. You think there’ll always be a piece of my heart with 

his name on it.” 

“No.” 

“That’s not it.” 

I was smiling and crying at the same time. “Dorian Thorne… I really did like you. I liked how gentle you were, how you made me feel like the only woman in the world–or maybe you can’t put it into words. That day you stood in the rain, something in my heart moved, and I thought, *Maybe it’s him.*” 

His eyes turned red at the edges, and his voice cracked as his shaking hands wiped my tears. “I know. Don’t say anymore. It feels like you’re saying goodbye.” 

“Don’t leave me. Please.” 

“Dorian Thorne–do you love me?” 

He didn’t hesitate. “Yes. Of course. Nobody has ever loved you 

more than I do.” 

But you’re also the one who hurt me. 

I sniffled. “Then I’ll trust you one more time.” 

Not yet. It wasn’t time yet. 

Two days before the wedding, Dorian Thorne and I went back 

to our own homes. 

When he dropped me off, he held my hand so tight, like he was 

afraid I’d run away. 

“Evelyn… we are getting married, right?” 

I didn’t say yes or no. 

He tried to reassure himself. “Of course we are. We’re getting 

married.” 

That night, I snuck back to the house we’d shared. 

The one full of memories. 

I took everything that was mine. 

I even wiped away any strands of hair–I know that a werewolf can track a person with a single strand. 

All I left behind were the broken gifts he’d given me, and the wedding dress I’d slashed to ribbons. 

And my wedding–planning journal. And my wedding ring. 

I really can’t wait to see the look on Dorian Thorne’s face at the wedding when he realizes I’m not there. 

It’s going to be spectacular.
