“Vivian Hale, where the hell are you?”

Nathan’s voice was full of anger.

“Outside.”

“I had someone check the transaction history under your name. You actually sold the things I gave you on a resale app?”

“Are you that desperate for money?”

I looked at the urn in my arms.

“Yes. I’m very desperate.”

Nathan sneered on the other end.

“I told you. If you come back now and apologize, twenty million will be wired to your account immediately.”

“No need.”

“Vivian Hale!”

Nathan’s voice rose sharply.

“I gave you an out yesterday. Are you really going to keep burning bridges?”

“Nathan Reed, let’s divorce.”

The other end of the line suddenly went quiet.

After a full ten seconds, Nathan spoke again.

His voice was full of mockery.

“What stunt are you pulling now?”

“Your father’s company is still waiting for you to save it. What do you have to divorce me with?”

I said nothing.

Nathan seemed to think he had my weakness firmly in his hand.

“There’s a charity ball tomorrow night. Get ready and come with me.”

“And stop wearing those drab clothes.”

“If you behave well tomorrow night, I can consider sending five million first.”

Before I could answer, he hung up.

I looked at my father’s photo.

He smiled so kindly.

It was a photo taken five years ago.

Back then, when Nathan came to ask for my hand, my father held his hand and asked him to take good care of me.

What had Nathan said then?

He said, “Don’t worry, sir. I’ll never let her suffer.”

I lowered my head and looked at the wedding band on my ring finger.

Then I slipped it off.

The next day, I spent most of my time in the wake room.

At five in the afternoon, Ethan Hale called.

“Vivian, where are you?”

“I’m not going.”

“Vivian, stop making a scene.”

“Isn’t Chloe there? Let her go.”

Ethan coughed awkwardly.

“Vivian, did you hear something?”

“He just wants you to swallow your pride.”

He paused, then lowered his voice.

“Vivian, Nathan said that if you keep acting like this, he really won’t help anymore.”

I threw a stack of memorial offerings into the burning bowl.

Firelight reflected against my face, hot and sharp.

“Ethan, tell him I’m busy.”

I hung up.

The memorial offerings in the bowl burned to ash.

I stood and brushed the dust off my clothes.

Tomorrow was the burial service.

I had to confirm the burial plot I had arranged yesterday.
