He Came Back Ten Years Too Late Chapter 08

Ethan stood rooted to the spot.

After a long moment, he fet out a laugh.

“That’s impossible. Jasmine Carter can’t be dead.”

“The call said she’d cling to me and Cassidy like a curse we could never shake.”

His certainty held firm.

Then he saw my body, and it vanished.

Aunt Rosa regarded him without sympathy.

“I shouldn’t have brought you here to disturb her peace, but I won’t let you slander her after death, too.”

Ethan’s stare locked on the arm sticking out from beneath the white sheet.

A scar marked it, left behind when I’d once taken a bowl of scalding soup for him.

He’d kissed that scar countless times. He couldn’t possibly mistake it.

His body swayed.

His face drained of color.

I watched in silence as he stumbled forward and took my already-cold hand.

“Jazz?”

He forced a smile and said my name softly.

“Come on. Get up. I’m here to take you home.”

The words seemed to turn time back to when we were young.

Ethan had stood on the shore, smiling brightly and waving at me.

“Jazz, let’s go home.”

But now, I could never smile back at him again.

The smile finally fell from Ethan’s face.

“Stop this. I told you I’d come for you after ten years.”

“I kept my promise. I’m even a few days early. Don’t be mad. Get up and look at me, okay?”

By then, my heart had long since gone still..

But the force holding me there hadn’t disappeared. I still couldn’t leave.

Thankfully, Aunt Rosa stopped him before he could do anything else.

She placed the butterflyfish diamond ring in Ethan’s hand.

“This ring kept her tied to you for her entire life, and it made her trust the wrong person.”

“Don’t keep her here any longer.”

Tears filled Ethan’s eyes…

“Jazz… how did she die?”

Aunt Rosa was quiet for a moment.

“Bone cancer.”

Ethan closed his eyes. At last, he understood

why a simple grip on my wrist when we’d met again had made me gasp in pain.

He started to speak, but his phone rang.

When he saw the caller ID, his expression changed sharply.

Ten years earlier, he’d gotten this call, too.

That time, it had predicted that my jealousy would drive me to have Cassidy sexually assaulted and killed.

It had even said I’d try to die with him.

But it had never mentioned that I would die in the very year all the predictions came true.

A terrible suspicion began to take shape in his mind.

Ethan answered slowly.

A panicked voice came through.

“Don’t bring Jasmine Carter home! If you do, Cassidy will still die.”

This time, Ethan didn’t believe it.

His voice turned glacial.

“Who the hell are you?”
