Maybe the disappointment on my face was too obvious.

Ethan sighed.

“Lila, when are you finally going to grow up?”

As soon as he said that, he draped his shirt over my shoulders.

I finally snapped out of it.

I pulled his shirt off and stuffed it back into his hands.

“I don’t need it.”

Ethan’s gaze darkened instantly.

“Sophie, let’s go.”

“She doesn’t know how to appreciate anyone’s kindness.”

After saying that, Ethan strode forward angrily.

Sophie didn’t leave with him.

I was staring at my chat history with AI Guy in a daze and didn’t notice what Sophie was doing at all.

“Lila, I’m apologizing to you. Are you even listening?”

The moment I realized someone was touching my hearing aid, my head shot up.

“What are you doing?”

But I jerked back too hard, and Sophie yanked my hearing aid right off.

A sharp pain shot through my inner ear.

I stared at Sophie in disbelief.

“Hey, give me my hearing aid back!”

But at that moment, Sophie’s mocking expression seemed to loom larger in my vision.

“Forgive me first. If you forgive me, I’ll give it back.”

That was when I finally understood why so many people disliked Sophie.

I had no reason to laugh and play along with her.

My expression turned serious.

“My hearing aid is expensive. If you break it, you won’t be able to afford replacing it.”

“Give it back. Now.”

But Sophie glanced back at Ethan’s retreating figure, and the smugness in her eyes only deepened.

“Stop pretending, Lila.”

“No wonder Ethan got sick of you. You really are disgusting.”

As she spoke, Sophie raised her arm and held my hearing aid up in the air.

Then she let go.

I watched helplessly as my hearing aid fell onto the sand, then was swept into deeper water by the tide.

“What is wrong with you, Sophie?”

I rushed into the ocean without thinking, desperate to get my hearing aid back.

Just then, a figure appeared beside me and pushed me back toward the shore.

“It’s too dangerous. I’ll look for it.”

Through my blurred vision, I was certain he wasn’t Ethan.
