He Brought Me Home, But Never Made Me Family Chapter 05

He Brought Me Home, But Never Made Me Family Chapter 05

I studied him carefully.

There were dark circles under his eyes.`

He looked exhausted, like he had not slept in days.

We had similar features, but different lives had turned us into completely different people.

He was not the family I wanted.

“I’m going home. Here’s your key.”

He panicked, his voice rising.’

“Go home where? This is your home. The Caldwells aren’t blood. What can they give you?”

When I froze, he rubbed his temples.

“I’m not yelling at you. I just don’t want things to get harder. Isla’s not in a good place right now. Don’t make it worse. Just give me a little more time and I’ll fix this.”

It was the first time he had spoken to me like that.

But all I wanted was to go back to my real home.

All I wanted was to leave a place that never wanted me.

How was that making things worse?

My chest tightened.

Good thing there was not much of me left that still cared about him.

Before I could speak, Isla’s voice called from downstairs.

“Adrian, hurry! We’re going to miss the flight.”

Adrian’s expression softened instantly.

“She’s not doing well. I’m taking her away for a few days.”

“If you want to go back to the Caldwells, stay there for now. I’ll come get you when I’m back.”

“Don’t worry about the residency. I’ll handle it so you can enroll smoothly.”

He finished speaking, and Tyler ran up.

“Sis, what are you standing here for? We’re waiting for you downstairs…”

Our eyes met.

Both he and Adrian froze.

Adrian grabbed my suitcase first.

“I’ll walk you down.”

Two cars waited in front of the apartment building.

Isla sat in the front black Mercedes-Maybach.

When she saw me, her smile froze.

Then she silently rolled up the window.

Adrian still caught the small move.

His tone turned urgent.

“Call me if you need anything. I’ll come get you when I’m back.”

He looked at Mom and Dad.

“Thank you for taking care of her these next few days.”

Mom and Dad just smiled.

“She’s our daughter.”

Adrian looked like he wanted to say more.

But someone more important was waiting for him up front.

He nodded and hurried back to the car.

The car turned and headed in the opposite direction from us.

When our eyes met, he was already leaning down to comfort a sulking Isla.

He never saw me mouth goodbye.

It was fine.

From now on, you can keep your one and only sister.

I was going back to mine.
