He Brought His Mistress, I Brought My Lawyers Chapter 14

Ethan pressed the power button impatiently.

The instant the screen lit up, missed calls and stern messages from his parents flooded the notification bar.

But the name he was looking for remained silent.

Avery’s chat was still quiet, as if she had vanished from the world.

The thought made his heart contract. The chill that had clung to him in the Saint Barthélemy sea breeze now intensified, drilling into his bones.

At last, he could no longer hold back. He dialed the number he knew by heart.

A soft tone sounded in the receiver. Before the call could connect, Sloane appeared and pressed the hang-up button.

“There’s a time difference between here and Boston. Avery must be resting.”

“Ethan, her head injury still needs rest. Calling her now would only disturb her.”

Sloane’s words were seamless, each one sounding as if she were thinking of both of them.

The anxiety in Ethan’s chest dissipated. He nodded, thinking she was right. If Avery wasn’t contacting him, maybe it was the time difference, or maybe she was just throwing a tantrum.

When he got back, he would give her the sapphire necklace he’d bought as an apology and surprise her.

She would be thrilled. Just like before, she would post the gift on Instagram and announce to the world that they had reconciled.

He had always known Avery loved surprises. Every time he traveled, he carefully selected gifts for her—rare art, dazzling jewels. Every time he placed a gift in her hands and saw the starlight in her eyes, it gave him the greatest sense of accomplishment.

The plane landed at Boston Logan at four in the afternoon.

If he hurried, maybe he could still take her to City Hall before it closed and reapply for their marriage license.

To surprise her, he suppressed the tremor in his heart and remained silent. After landing, he got straight into a car and sped toward the Beacon Hill apartment he shared with her.

He had even planned his first line.

The moment he pushed open the door, he would say, in his most affectionate voice:

“Avery! Let’s go get married!”
