He Brought His Assistant On Our Honeymoon And Gave Me A Separate Room Chapter 10

I stepped out of the car, the hem of my light-colored trench coat fluttering in the breeze. I felt relaxed and radiant, as though a weight had finally been lifted from my shoulders.

Adrian froze. For a moment, she looked like the woman he’d first met. It shamed him to think how

close he’d come to extinguishing that spark.

He hurried forward.

“Claire.”

Startled, I turned toward the voice. Once I saw who it was, I quickened my pace.

“Sweetheart, wait!”

Adrian rushed forward a few steps, but a large hand stopped him before he could reach me. The bodyguard’s face was stern, his voice level.

“Keep your distance.”

Adrian had no choice but to stop. He called out to me, the bodyguard still between us.

“Sweetheart, we’re still married. You can’t treat me like this. At least let me explain…”

I paused and looked back at him.

“I’ve filed for divorce. Watch for the papers over the next few days.”

His mouth opened, pain and disbelief in his eyes.

The next day, he came again, eagerly showing me the insulated bag he carried.

“Claire, look-the smoked duck you love! I had it flown in. Try some!”

I ignored him.

On the third day, he waited outside my office building. Nathan had security ask him to leave before

he could get anywhere near me.

On the fourth day, he was waiting at the entrance to my neighborhood. This time he didn’t

approach, just pleaded in a hoarse voice.

“Claire, give me five minutes. Just five.”

He’d lost weight, dark circles beneath his eyes. Once so proud and confident in his crisp suits, he stood there looking utterly drained.

didn’t come sooner because I had so much to sort out. I was afraid of dragging you into it. But it’s all taken care of now. We can start over. Look, I made the necklace. It’s better than all the others. Will you try it on?”

His voice shook as he held up the necklace. I stood a few steps away, saying nothing for a long time.

He slowly lowered his hand, then bowed and began apologizing.

He admitted he’d taken everything I’d done for granted.

He confessed to being arrogant, to treating my brother and me badly. Through tears, he begged me for another chance.

I listened quietly, not moving an inch. Only when he was sobbing too hard to speak did I answer.

“Adrian, it’s too late.”

My expression was blank. No hatred, no resentment. Nothing. I looked at him the way I’d look at a

stranger.

“There’s no future for us. I’m better off without you.”

I walked around him and headed home. I didn’t stop again.
