He Brought His Assistant On Our Honeymoon And Gave Me A Separate Room Chapter 06

The papers trembled in his hands. He stared at the word divorce, his eyes widening as his thoughts

ssolved into chaos.

He’d thought Claire was ignoring his calls because she was still sulking. He hadn’t imagined she was ending their marriage.

His grip tightened, crumpling the agreement as he muttered to himself.

“Claire wouldn’t divorce me. That’s impossible. Other people might split up, but not us…”

He suddenly looked up and glared at the clerk.

“You’re lying, aren’t you? You can’t joke about something like this!”

He slapped the agreement onto the counter, spun around, and rushed for the elevator. The clerk recoiled, speaking softly.

“Ms. Bennett also asked me to tell you she’s not someone who lives off you.”

Adrian didn’t hear. Still clutching the flowers, he hurried upstairs and pounded on Claire’s door.

It opened to reveal a stranger wrapped in a bath towel, his expression annoyed.

“Who are you? What do you want?”

A woman behind him looked Adrian over curiously. Adrian checked the room number, then looked at them again. Claire really had checked out. She was gone.

His grip loosened, and the bouquet fell to the floor.

“I’m sorry.”

He backed away, stumbling.

Claire had talked about this oceanfront hotel again and again: seeing the ocean without getting out of bed, romantic walks along the white-sand beach, the restaurant’s smoked duck, which she’d said was the best in the country.

He’d remembered every detail and arranged it all to give her the honeymoon they’d missed five years ago. He’d never imagined she’d be the one to leave first.

She’d wanted this so much. How could she be gone?

His palms were slick with sweat as he took out his phone. He sent her an instant message, then

tried texts and emails.

The good news: she hadn’t blocked him or removed him from her contacts.

The bad news: the woman who used to answer within seconds was acting as though he didnt exist.

His chest went hollow with a fear he’d never felt before. He inmediately called Lily to book ima flight home.

When she heard Claire had left, her tone turned mocking.

“Mrs. Mercer’s playing hard to get now…”

“Lillian Reed.”

He cut her off, his voice so cold it sounded unfamiliar even to him.

“Show my wife some respect. If you hadn’t kept screwing up at work, would I have had to leave her alone on our honeymoon for a last-minute business trip?”

He’d never spoken to her that harshly before. Lily fell silent.

Back at their home in Alderhaven, there was no trace of Claire.

The place was frighteningly clean. Her clothes, her makeup, her cup-all gone. By the door, his slippers sat alone, her matching pair gone.

The home felt unfamiliar. Grief hit so hard he had to brace a hand against the wall to stay upright.

Still no messages. Every call went unanswered. He dug his fingers into the hair at his temples.

“Why is this happening?”

Then he thought of Evan. He’d deliberately punished Claire’s brother for Lily’s sake. Claire had cried and pleaded until her voice was raw.

He drove straight to the private care facility, only to be told Evan had already left.
